the questiona are what do u consider as heavy lift and what is its intended usage.

faa has reclassified many operations of drones as other than hobby usage

I already know the FAA classification of a drone and its intentions. The Drone I'm trying to build needs to lift 500 lb. One big question is does it need to be belt driven or shaft driven? And it will be for commercial use.

damn that is a heavy lift like u said
that means total aircraft weight will most likely exceed 700 lbs depending upon flight duration
think 50 cc size elec motors move an aircraft of 40 lbs (large wings) cub style
geared down they should be able to operate as I think 60 to 70 lbs as speed should not be an issue
but even with 6 motors u still have a weight issue.
another option would b e helicopter style similar to what nascar toyd with a few years ago that was gasoline powered.

Gas power is a very good option I do see drones that are big enough to carry a human on Utube but like everything video doesn't lie, ha ha. I would like to stick with electric motors with a reduction gear for torque. But I need to figure what motors first and I would like them one size over what I would need. Looking at a 4 to 8 propeller setup can be a pull push option with retractable booms i.e. they fold in next to the pod to fit in my Van. With the motors flight duration should be about a 45 minute.

Check Out what I'm DEVELOPING for Just THAT!!! It's an ELECTRIC Self,Rotating,ROTARYWING,But, Mine is. MEGAWING for IMPROVED Lift! See the 1st 3 Tests on YouTube or TWITTER Rotate1953! This will OUTLIFT ALL other QUAD,TRI or OCTO COPTER w/only 2 MOTORS! R/C Demonstrator will be a GREAT LIFTING UAV & Full Size will use ANY Small E.V. as a COCKPIT/POWER supply! Join the REVIVAL!!! See Hillers Hornet & My R/C GREEN Hornet! It's also a SOLUTION to POLLUTION!!

I'm having enough trouble trying to lift 5lbs. 500lbs is insane!
