Default PBY-5A Catalina ?

hi does anyone know of plans for a 1/6th scale PBY-5A Catalina ? I know there are the Vintage r/c plans 108" cat., but isn't that 1/12th ? And has anybody had experience with the plans or built one ?

Default PBY-5A Catalina ?

I think G and P makes a fiberglass kit in many different sizes. maybe they'll just sell the plans alone. It looks llike a pretty nice kit. I can get the url if you need it.

Default PBY-5A Catalina ?

I hate to burst your bubble or discourge you from building a cool plane, but I have yet to see a model PBY perform well in the water.
The most comon problem I've seen is the small/scale tip floats not having the boayincy or surface area and angle of attack to keep the wing tips from getting to low on taxing or digging in the water on take off..

I'd keep this in mind if you decide to build one, and make sure the tip floats are big enough and angled enough to keep the tips out of the water. even if they aren't at the scale size or angle

Good luck

If you are still looking for a really large PBY, here's a link to a 170" w/s kit.

Good Luck!

Default PBY-5A Catalina ?

I contacted Conachen Aircraft and he said it was between 1/7th and 1/8th scale , and i want exact 1/6th scale, I believe the Vintage R/C PBY-5A is 1/12th, any one know for sure ? so I will enlarge every thing by 200% if they are.

Yeah, they are 1/12 scale so you need to dubble them. Your wing span will be 216" 18 feet.

Say you don't want this 6th scale size just so you can fill it full of those Elite Force dolls do you?

I haven't. I think that the plans that I will go with though. I like to work with wood more than foam and fiberglass. Have you seen that page where some Dutch guys are making one? They said the planes are very hard to read. They took them and got them copied unto a disk them they cleaned up the lines in paint shop then had the full size plans printed from that.

Here is their web page.

Hate to burst YOUR bubble but one of the guy's in my club has a 100" PBY with retractable tip floats and they work just fine. The plane flies great and is VERY realistic on the water and in the air, is a joy to watch, it's landings are gorgeous.
I want one but I only do ARF's and O.P.'s (other peoples)

Just for the small versions (~130cm): We had several at a meeting two weeks ago, which flew well. I made my first flight with mine and it ROW just fine. One model had even retractable landing gear and floats and flew fine, too.

PAF also had a ca. 200cm(or a bit more) version there which made a ROW with half power just fine.

Everything electric !

Iknow this is a very late reply but thought I'd post it in case someone else comes across this searching for giant scale PBY Catalina plans as I know good ones are hard to come by.
I have made some plans from scratch in the scale of 1:8. These are quality plans and can be purchased from my site: http://www.wix.com/Sturla/PBY-Catalina
I also sell completed Landing Gears, Cowls and Blisters. Sturla

Nice Sturla!

What is the engine range on this beast?

How much are the retracts?

Can you mail the plans in a tube to the US or will they be folded?

If you are interested in my Catalina plans and retracts you should check out my FLICKR site - http://www.flickr.com/photos/sturla/
Catalina Plans $95 plust P&H - plans are shipped in a tube
Main Landing Gear/Retracts $995 + P&H
Nose Landing Gear/Retracts $395 + P&H

The plane has 2x Quadra 35 engines but I think you could also use Zenoha 22 engines

Mike, Iborrowed some old plans of the actual Catalina from an old flight mechanic and used them to create the retracts.
My Catalina plans have details of the retracts.
