A remarkable project! I am nearing completion on a 124" Emily ( 4 engines) but won't have the same degree of scale detail unless more ambitioun kicks in real soon. ;-) Your power loading gives me confidence in the choice of the OS52 four stroke. Weight will be 30 pounds or perhaps a bit more so that should be lots.

hi John,

give me the specificaions of your model: Weight, wingsurface, Wingairfoil.
specifications of the original plane : Weight, total powerpant (in hp) of the 4 engines.

with these I can calculate your engines with my own developed calculatemethode (2 methods: one for all kind of models, also scale. One method only for scale models).

cheers,
Jan.

for more and my other models (158" B17, 122", P-61, also scratch build from own plan, and real winners in the European Scale contest scene) see my homepage:

What a beautiful plane!

I'm in the process of bulding a 104" PBN Nomad (http://www.rcairplane.net/index0.html) that will definitely not have the degree of scale details as you have, but I'm looking forward to flying it this spring. It will probably end up at about 20# and I am planning to use two YS63FZS engines, listed at 1.6 HP each by YS. What does your program show for this combination?

Jan, here is info on the Emily: Projected weight about 30 pounds but could run over ~10% depending on how much the paint weighs and how much ballast I need to get the CG right. Span is 124"; average chord 14" so area is 12 square feet giving a wing loading of 40 ounces per sq. ft. at 30# Airfoil is NACA 2417. The Emily type 2 was powered by four x 1850 hp radialds and had a maximum weigth of 71,650 pounds. Type one used 1530 hp engines and a weight of 16,340 pounds.

dear John,

I have calculated the engines for your Emily flying boat with my own devoloped calculation methodes.
First with the method for all kind off models, than with the method only for scale models.

Result of the first method : 4x 0.475 four stroke. (calculated with 33 pounds of weight!)
Result of the scale method: 4x 0.480 four stroke for scale flying! (calculated with 33 pounds weight!)

So don't worry, the 4x Osmax 0.52 are exact the right engines for this model, and with these engines the maximal weight for scale flying even is allowed to be 35,6 pound!
So you will have 5,6 pound for paint, scale details, ballast, etc.! (in vieuw of your 30 pounds now!)

kind regards,
Jan.

Thanks Jan. It is always good to have a cross check on one's own conclusions. The 52s are already mounted and I hope to have the plane in the air this season. There is lots of room in the cowls and for prop clearance for 70s if I had to add more power but by then I would have to take out a mortgage on it. ;-)

Hello seaplane lovers! win here from the philippines. im currently building a sunderland from your plans. im done with the wing assembly and will soon be sheeting it. I have a few questions regarding the build. I have viewed your website photos and they were a great help. Are there anybody else building these at the moment? has somebody made fiberglass cowls for these?
Is there a build thread for this aside from this forum?
thanks thanks.
