RE: northstar help
Congrats, Simon.
They both look nice. So.. the shim was 1/8" thick at the top and tapered to the bottom?
I'll have to try that on my drawings and see if I can make a propeller fit in the remaining space.
I've started a build thread on another one at:

Simon:
I think I'll make a 1/8 shim like you did, only put it between the engine mount and the firewall, then move the engine mount up about 1/8" inch from plan. That should give the same thrust line and downthrust without the necessity of changing the angle on the upper pylon rib, etc. I should be able to shape the cowl so that everything comes out looking right.
I drew a 1/8 shim on my plans, and extended everything out. It measures at 3 degrees downthrust.
Do you have any information you could share on the C of G? There's a lot of discussion about that on this side of the pond. I know for certain that if one balances the A/C on the rearmost mark with an empty tank, that it will be uncontrollable in pitch. I'm considering balancing mine at about 11-12% of MAC with a FULL tank for the first flight.
Regards

RE: northstar help
Hi
The cg for my arrow fully rigged with no fuel is 408mm from the trailing edge of the wing.
I picked the trailing edge of the wing to measure from as its likely to be somthing that dosn't vary on Individual models.
A further point to note is that my arrow does not have the wing strakes i decided to leave them off after flying somone elses arrow that flew well without strakes.
I think i'll go and find the plan and see how this compares to the suggested cg.
Simon

Simon:
I maidened the Arrow today, and couldn't be more pleased. It will take me all day to calm down. Thanks so very much for your help with CG. The complete story is on the other thread:

RE: northstar help
Hi, I built the polaris and now must build the northstar. I have the plans- would love the assembly manual.... Does anyone have a copy they could scan to me? I have a paypal account and could pay for your troubles. Or if that is too much photocopy them and post? Again I can pay via paypal- sorry but desperate for the plans. Really intersted re: the wing constructions as I am scartch building using CF tubes for the engine pod.
Thanks
Thanks

Thanks-great help. After postage it will be a bit more (I'm in the UK)- if anyone has an electronic copy (or could make one!) I would be much obliged. Thanks

RE: northstar help
That's great news! I have the plans (3 LARGE sheets) however as I'm new to building I thought the assembly manual would be a useful addition....Is this what you have?
Thanks again, Adam

RE: northstar help
I ordered the NorthStar plans from Balsa USA and instructions only to find out that they don't give you the plans for the ribs?
Can someone send me a scan of the RIBS so I can start making this model.
Thanks

If your prop, regardless of the engine type and length of mount, is over the CG on this design then you wasted your money on that aerodynamics course.
Most of what you chose to post here is decidedly meant to impress while underscoring your questionable knowledge of the subject .
Unfortunately many R/C flying fields are populated by your type .....but , I'll debate aerodynamics with you anytime ......

To settle it once and for all, Laddie's CG for this bird (as shown on the plans) should have been labeled "with fuel tank full", and the engine pod MUST be given a minimum of 3 degrees downthrust or takeoffs become impossible under all but perfect conditions.
I finally scrapped my old glow one, as it was very dry rotted inside. Did the same with the electric as I finally came to believe Ivan that covering is nothing but trouble when it gets wet. If I ever build another, it will be sealed with silkspan, dope, talcum power and paint. The foam wings I build didn't work out either- too thin at the TE and they both acquired a down hook that had to be compensated for with more reflex up trim.
How ya doin Scale, Simon and Strykaas?

Three years ago, I build electric powered 44” North Star out of Dollar Store foam sheets. All foam sheets had the paper removed and then the sheets were doubled up using the contact cement. My NS had flat airfoil wing. I am going to try to post the pictures.
The model handled as well as the original balsa NS.
