Lanier Mariner- Help me solve this problem
I test flew my Mariner 40 this weekend and the first flight was a little hariy. Not sure what is going on here, but I think it may be the thrust line, what d o you think? The plane was balanced per the book, and I am using a TT 46 BB Pro with a 11x7 Master Airscrew prop. It required about 4 ozs of weight in the nose to balance accurately. There is plenty of power. The plane did not want to lift off, but instead bounced along at an extremely fast pace before jumping into the air and going straight up. I would have swore the plane was tail heavy. I tried to trim in out but at full throttle it would just stand on it tail and try to hover. After I got some control of it, and made a few circles, it would not trim out and continued to want to climb. when I cut back on the throttle it leveled out and I managed to fly it down to the water and land with no problem. I have rechecked the CG and it looks about right.
Do you think it would help to shim the motor with a little downthrust, or would you add more weight to the nose? At a loss of what to do on this plane, it went together great and looks really good on the water (not so good in the air right now, but I am confident I can get it to fly).

THAT'S WEIRD!
I can't think of anything that would cause such erratic behavior in a Mariner, except that maybe a bunch of water got inside the tail, and progressively leaked out during the flight.
Did you use the pushrods that came with it, or did you replace them with a different type?
Did you check for water inside afterward?

Doc:
The engine mount in mine was badly warped and it added a couple of degrees of upthrust and leftthrust that shouldn't have been there. I used washers to get the engine lined up corectly with the firewall. You could use a different mount.
Even after fixing that, I have to use a lot of down elevator trim.

I don't think it was water in the fuse, at least there was none when I got it down. I took great care in sealing everything up with silicone, and it should be pretty much waterproof. I have a feeling it is more to do with the thrust, and possibly needing a little more weight in the nose. I plan on starting there first.
The only thing that was wet when I finally got it down was my underwear..LOL

I have an OS 50SX in mine and I have a 5 cell AA pack right in the nose under the access hatch. Did you put those suction breakers on the bottom of the hull ( brain cramp, couldn't remeber the technical term)?

It's tough to get old! What can I say! <LOL>
Mine has a fair amount of UP Thrust. As I understand it, it helps to lift the plane. I know one thing, if you jam the throttleopen it will have a tendency to push the nose down into the water. Throttle up gently to give the hull to get up on step and I think You'll find it will break off the water quite easily.
Good luck!

Update.
Added two ounces of nose weight...next flight was better but still not great.
Two washers behind the engine mount on the top two screws...flew much better.
Resealed the front cover with eltrical tape, since I think there was a little water getting in thru there even though it had been taped and sealed with silicone.
Now she flies great, and looks really nice in the air. Thanks for all the tips.
