Did you guys mount the OS 46 on the provided engine mount or did you go with an aftermarket mount? I am seriously thinking about getting that engine and was curious how it mounted. As good as it does with the 40LA I bet it is a real blast with the 46.

We are building the plane. i just flew his plane for about 30 mins. the holes provided were to far away to get the engine holes lined up so we will order the exspantion or drill our own holes plus my instructor every thursday will check up on my plane so he will tell me what to do.

Hi guys ! Here are my two float planes. #1 is an Ace Seamaster built from a kit with a Royal .40 engine -> this plane can be raced on the water like a speedboat ! #2 is a VMAR Challenger Trainer with 36 inch Slocan floats and a GMS .47 engine. The plane is a honey (yes ! ! shoot me if you want to BUT I actually LIKE this VMAR plane ! ! Clark "y" airfoil and almost no dihedral ) The GMS is powerful and only deadsticks when it is out of fuel. The other pic is the rescue team. . . I really like float flying - it beats a day a the regular field any time . . . plus . . the spectators at the lake have bikini's ! !

Nice planes. The Ace Seamaster is a great looking airplane. Does it stay dry inside th fuselage?
Rescue boats are a necessity!

Both planes stay dry inside. I used wing seat tape / silicon sealant to seal the joints and have not had any water leakage issues. The Challenger has a home made duel rudder system (pic) - it looks great taxiing around with the engine at idle. With full power it is "on step" after approx 10 feet and will be airborne in about 40 to 50 feet - but I prefer to apply the power slooowly and do a nice loooong take off run. A friend's plane has ended up nose first in the water - way out on the far side of the lake. It took the "rescue team" a good 10 minutes to get to it. He just dried it all out, cleaned out the engine, fired it up and was ready to go again. The empty fuel tank and the floats kept the plane standing up out of the water - none of the radio gear got wet. If the radio gear does get wet - unplug the battery and let it all dry out well - usually everything will be OK. When the balsa dried it looked normal. When choosing floats for your plane - it works real well if the floats are approx 75% of the length of the plane. Mount the floats so that the main wing is 1 to 2 degrees positive to the top of the floats. Ideally the floats should protrude in front of the prop arc for a few inches. Most float sets come with good instructions.

RE: Superstar on floats (pics)
My worst crash? Hmmm... So many to choose from. I would say the worst was the first Superstar I bought. It was an older ARF kit from the local hobby shop. The wing joiner was all wood and not very strong. On about the 4th or 5th flight with it I was fealing good and decided to try some tricks. The wing folded up in the middle of a loop at about 100ft. and the whole thing came spiraling down. I saved the radio and engine but the airframe was shot.
I decided to send it back to Hobbico to see what they would do. I sent a letter explaining what had happened and they sent back a brand new plane with the new metal wing reinforcement, engine, and radio and a nice note! Great company.
Others include slamming into fences, trees, myself, and getting tripped up in the water and floating on the wings as well as many others.
Crashes are inevitable.
How is yours doing? No crash stories yet I hope.

Hi Jeff:
It's very nice to hear that Hobbico took care of you in a moment of frustration! Not too many companies have that attitude, although they all should.
I replaced the steel rod (wing joiner) with a 1/4 in. fiberglass rod, 1.4 oz. compared to .4 oz.!! And probably stronger. Did have to drill the wings out, as the steel rod is a tad smaller (probably metric), but no big deal.
Have a good one,
Russ

Mini boy, Thats a great idea to use a fiberglass rod instead of the steal. I may have to try that. It was nice that Hobbico responded the way they did. I was not expecting much but the guy at the hobby shop said it would be worth a shot, that other people had pretty good luck in the past.
To bad about the crash Rcbegginer, it happens. I figure if I fly and don't crash it was a good day. If I fly and crash, atleast I wasn't at work (and I get to buy a new plane).

Did the wing joiner break? Was it wood or metal (I can't imagine the metal one breaking?!?!?).
If it was wood, you might think of replacing it with a piece of fiberglass arrow shaft from the sporting goods store ... VERY strong and VERY light.
I will post some pics later today or tomorrow for your and Jeff's enjoyment.
Happy and SAFE flying,
Russ

Then I take it that the wing itself broke apart where the wing joiner goes into the two halfs of the wing??
