Default Great Planes 40 Float Kit Problems**Now with pics!!**

Has anyone had problems with installing the middle (E&F) formers for this kit ? I'm at a stand still, these 2 formers don't line up with the slots on the deck. Was there an addendum for the manual?

Thanks, Chris

Chris, the doublers F & E do not line up with their tops. Doubler E supports the rear edge of the forward portion of the float bottom. Former F supports the forward edge of the REAR plywood portion of the float bottoms. This is the location where the STEP is created. Look at the photo #2 on page 6. The bottom edge of Former E aligns with the top of the LIGHTENING HOLES in doubler E. Just place the two together just as shown on the photo and glue them together. Hope this helps. Al

Thanks but that isnt the trouble, the trouble is the pre cut slots for the formers on the deck or the spine are not right. When I put former E&F in the pre cut slots on the deck it doesnt line up with the slots on the spine. I'll take some detailed pictures after work and post them.

thanks for the reply, Chris

If you look at pics you'll see that there are slots on the deck for each former. The problem is that the slots on the deck for formers E&F (which are one piece) do not line up. Everything else on the floats line up perfect. So this was the problem on my first kit then I call Great Planes customer service and they don't have any detailed specs for the kit like slot distance measurements so they send me out a brand new kit (how cool is that?) but the same exact problem happened with the slots on the deck not lining up. Which brings me to believe that I'm the one who's messing it up. I cant figure it out.

Please help!
Thanks, Chris

I think you put your top deck on backwards.

See page 6 of the instructions, first thing under Framing:
"Regardless of which size Sport Float you are building, the forward end of the float deck is the end that tapers slightly."

I measured my float top deck:
From the rear to former G 8 3/8 "
From former G to E/F 7 1/2
From front to former C 8 3/8"
From former C to E/F 9 1/4"

This would make E/F 17 3/8" from the front,
15 7/8" from the rear.

Width of top deck at rear is 2 1/8"
front is 1 5/8"

Double check that top deck to see where the slots are from each end.
