Default DID YOU 'GLASS YOUR FLOATS? BALSA USA

Balsa USA 1/4 scale EDO floats: The instuctions say nothing about 'glassing the entire float. They only mention "applying resin". I use West Sytems epoxy products and feel they need to be 'glassed. Any words of experience?

Default RE: B'USA 1/4 Scale EDO FLOATS, GLASS 'EM?

I would say glass em! Shock loads are pretty high on float planes so on a plane of that size I would probably use 2oz cloth all over and double it on the bottom forward of the step. IMHO.

Yep Glass em I generally feather in a couple extra layers of glass from the step forward in the centre. This is the area that takes most of the abuse and also is the spot that the plane sits on when on the ground or in vehicle etc.
Have fun Brian

I have been using i think 3/4 oz glass with finishing resin the last few years. I bought 3'X35' piece from ebay about 5 years ago. Slowly getting it used up. I generally put 2 layers on bottom and single layer on sides and top. I also add a couple 1" or so wide strips from the step forward on the centre of the float. As mentioned preveously this is the area that the plane rests on when out of water and usally first place of contact when running up to beach etc. I finish the glassing as you would if glassing the entire plane. If you have not done this before there is tons of info here on how to do this. Then finish in paint of your choice.

Been flying the 1/3rd scale cub on the floats all summer with no glassing required. I just make sure I have something to set it on to keep the rocks off the bottom of the floats.
