Default GP .40 Cub on floats?

I have a GP.40 Cub kit and am planning to build it on floats. A few questions.

#1 Should I scratch the floats or buy the .40 size float kit?

#2 What engine should I use for power? I prefer a 4-stroke.

#3 Maybe this should be #1: Is this a good choice for float flying?

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

Default GP .40 Cub on floats?

It should provide you a lot of enjoyment. This is only my somewhat uneducated opinion.I think the Goldbeg cub has a much stronger wing structure, deciced after 2 rebuilds on my GP cub, presently it has a Goldberg wing, all that was left undamaged in a crash.I have crashed my Goldberg hard destroying the fuselage but no damage to wing,I beleive it has a pine dowel on leadsing edge and maybe heavier planking, might look into this differences when building see if you could beef up the GP.
I would buy the floats such as Goldbergs or GP if they have them leave the scratch building them to the more experienced flyers.Remember to beef up the bottom of the fuselage for the rear float mounts I use the front landing gear mount so no problem there.
Recently in another post about 4 cycles sounded like there power might be nice on a float plane,I was concerned about getting water into them but they seemed to think not a major issue,2-strokes I just dump out thew water and spin them till they start. Will try the 4cycle myself next spring.
THe Cub is a real nice float plane but as you can tell my bias is towrd the Goldberg but there is very little difference think it should serve you very well.GOOD LUCK.

Default Cub on floats

I would get the GP 40 size floats. Take you about a week to build depending..But are well designed and will have instructions on mounting them to your cub...
Any 50 sized 4-stroke will be fine and add to a more realistic flight. Most of my floaters have 4-C on them and have never had a problem with them.. If you get water in them, just flush out the carb with fuel..
Any cub on floats is an excellent choice. I learned to fly RC with a cub on floats..What you have is a scale rc trainer....good luck you'll love flying off water....

I can only speak for the goldberg floats, as they have lasted several years ... a 50 - 70 size 4 stroke will be perfect - especially throttled back to putt putt speed.....

1 Get the float kit, it will save to a fortune in headaches.

2 You need extra power for float flying, Don't go less than a 70 (OS70Surpass is ideal)

3 YES YES YES YES YES YES

I have the GP 40size Cub with the GP 40 floats and an OS 70 FS. It's a sweet plane, flies great, looks great and you can't beat a four stroke on any plane!! If I had it to do over I'd put two servos in for the the ailerons.

Default Float kits....

....Lemme just collaborate what the other fellas
have offered. Unless your building your own floats
from a proven design...they probably won't work.

Get a float kit, and build 'em. If the design isn't
correct....( mainly the "step" ) is will be hard, if
not impossible to seperate the plane from the
water. Also you will find that the "step" has to
be properly positioned at the CG, and the CG
has to be correct for the plane.

And yes, the Cub is perfect for floats....and they
look cool too.

Dave.
