Convair Sea Dart

RE: Convair Sea Dart
That would be a cool airplane, but I'd be scared of injesting water into the turbine! I believe that the full-scale had this happen once and it suffered explosive results!

RE: Convair Sea Dart
Nope. The only one they lost broke up in flight after the pilot hit afterburner too low and too slow, and the resulting acceleration triggered a pilot-induced oscillation. In front of company.

RE: Convair Sea Dart
In response to CJTYPED, the Sea Dart article appeared in the July 1989 issue of Model Aviation. The cover had a picture of the model, resting on the water, and the article, starting on Page 94 gave a history and photos of the real Sea Dart. This was a two part article, and I assume the second installment was in the August issue, but I do not have that particular issue, so can’t confirm it.
The author was James Gilgenback, who was also the builder of the model, which used a Dynamax fan unit powered by an OS 77. The model was 1/9th scale, with a weight around 10 pounds. From the article it suggests that the model was only flown off of grass, however, I would believe that the intent was to make water takeoffs. There is a photo of the model taxing on the water under power. Since I do not have the second article, there is no plan or any other information about the model. The July issue does not list a plan set, however, it may have been in the next issue.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
