An amazing and truly imressive aircraft... I have been thinking of building a model of it many times... Please send your pictures of your Dornier Wahl scale models!

Best regards,

Not commonly modeled, and on my "Someday" list.

However, a fellow in our club did make one and it is currently hanging in a museum. If you send me an email in two or three weeks, I will make a trip out there and get some photos for you.....

The Dornier Wahl is a good example of the human capability in engineeering.

It should be modeled over and over again.

Cheers,

Please Post a picture. I searched Google for "Dornier Wahl" and there were a few hits but no pictures. Unless the Wahl is also known by a type number.

Gosh, that would be EASY to model. D-ARUN is a different type aircraft--apparently a descendant of the Wahl, but the first two appear similar, with difference to the engine nacelle and vertical stabizer.....production revisions?

Was the Wahl also known as a Do-something?

Here's a scale drawing I found.
http://pgts.free.fr/retro/photoretro...ang=en&fin=131
Apparently Dornier "Wal" is another spelling used.

I did a google search on Dornier seaplanes
Then I refined it and searched on Dornier Wal.
Lotsa hits.

How do you post multiple pictures?

I believe the painting posted by Nony is a Dornier 18, not a Wahl.

I am looking for plans for the "Wal" I have an eletric motor that should fly about a 60" span model that has a shaft out each end of the motor. A natural for this application. Found lots of photos but no plans so far.

Here's the three-view that I posted a link to a coupla' posts back.

With the outlines, I would be tempted to fill them in with balsa bits in the traditional places.

It depends on how "scale" you want it, but at 60" span, I don't think you can carry a lot of scale detail.

I would even be tempted to use a trainer wing (swizzle stick?) instead of the original undercambered airfoil, and hang the boat part under it. Change the wingtip shape, cover it with , I presume, aluminum-color monokote, and fly.

Sorry for submitting this and not comment your posts for weeks urgh...

I have been busy, sorry.

I think Roald Amundsen used 2 Dornier Wahls in one of hes Arctic expeditions.

This sea-plane got so much history and engineering stuff in it, however, a Catalina is so much more beatiful.

Reason this aircraft never got more famous than it did, was because of progress, just like the air ships. It is still a master piece in sea planes (I think).

I would like to build both haha

Cheers,
Ikaros

"Wahl" means election in German,
try it with "Wal", which means whale
I`ve got a plan for a 49" depron Wal (1,5 MB pdf) for 2x 280 or 1x 400.
You can download it here:[link=http://www.nefkom.net/elektroflug/wal.pdf]www.nefkom.net/elektroflug/wal.pdf[/link]

This plane is a Savoia Marchettis, twin hulled, equipped with Isotta Fraschini motors.

Boys, it's your lucky day! Classic Aero has just what you're looking for. They currently have Sikorsky S-38 and S-39's and are working on a Dornier Wal and Savoia Marchetti S-55X. Tell them Wade sent you.

Downloaded the three page PDF file on the Depron Wal seaplane as above from the Nurenberg link, RCU member DO335.

Can't read German so wonder what is used for the wing as doesn't seem to be included within the three page model plan as downloaded?

Hi flicka5!
He made the wing from foam, covered with balsa. Pretty much work, I think.
Wingspan is 1270 mm, depth 180 mm, profile E205. The middle part (!QUOT!Flächenmittelstück!QUOT!) is 180 mm --> is`s above the tail in the plan.
But for such a small plane, I`d take a simple piece of Depron, bend the profile and use a carbon or spruce main spar.
You can build such a plane within hours... like my [link=http://www.nefkom.net/elektroflug/modell_piper_e.htm]Piper Cub [/link] (sorry for my bad English...).

Have fun!
Allen

Allen: your English is fine and exceeds a lot of my country men who are suppose to be Americans and speak the national language, English! Got the picture now for the Wal model as I thought something was missing in the downloaded plan. Have you seen this American model Wal version? I guess you have because I backtracked in this thread and found it above in another posting![]

I also like the SM55, apparently the Classic Aero large version is a bit away, working on the electric one for now. I have had this in my 'someday' file for some time. I have a small plan and was going to use this for my first fibreglass molded plane, ie. make 2 'fuses' for the one plane - makes the mold process a bit more practical.

Bart..I think your "Wal " is A Canadian Vickers Supermarine "Stranaer" belonging to 'QCA' Queen Charlotte Airlines.

Yup, too quick a grab, didn't really look at it, just 'pulled' it from the museum shots. Going back I guess the Wal shot was done on film.

Sorry about that, BUT it IS a Seaplane :-))
