homebuilt seaplane covering
Hi,I have just finished my Katarina seaplane from Aeromodeller international plan (july 2002). I have covered the wings with monokote and now i have to cover the fuselage. The airplane is very similar to the seamaster, only smaller (.25 size) and it lands on the fuselage. Can i cover also the fuselage in monokote? it will resist water? Someone knows if also the seamaster has the fuselage covered in plastic thermoadesive film?
Thanks!!! Gian.

Yes. You can cover the fuselage with your choice of iron-on covering. Monokote, Oracover, etc.
It is probably a good idea to waterproof the wood first (dope, varnish, etc). Inside and out. Also, cut a 2 cm wide strip of covering and pre-apply to any edges to "double" the covering where it might be damaged.
When covering the fuselage, start at the rear and work forward so that any overlapping seams will not be peeled open by the flowing water.

Just a note on the covering.
be sure and put the front bottom on last so the
seems will be 'blown' down. If you put it on first
the side pieces will be blown off by the water. Also, use spray rails.
use triangle stock balsa. looking at the
front of the plane they should look like this:
/------\ in order to keep the water tunneled
under the plane. Blend them in with the hull or
add them on after you cover. Be sure and cut the
monocote on the bottom out for glue and leave about 1/16 inch of covering that will be glued underneith the spray rail much in the way you would put on a gusset on the v-fin. If you aren't sure what I mean, just e-mail me at [email protected] and I will go into more depth. Water will kill a monocote job if you aren't careful. later dude. bird.
