About 6 years ago, he went out to take off, was pulling away from the dock when his Labrador came running , got out of its pen. He didn't see it coming, it jumped on a float and managed to stay on through the takeoff and fell off at about 200 feet up. It went through the roof of a house across the lake.

flew it, better than the last one but not the best it could, scared me because it required 37 clicks of right aleron to fly level, do floats have a differnt effect on the aleron trim settings than when its on wheels? or is something wrong with my setup - there is possibly some small amount of slop in the rudder.

floats don't have any effect,,,,,,,you got a warp in a wing panel. when you bolt on the wing braces did you get them on ok ? No way can it fly right if your carrying that much trim.

I just got a Hangar 9 J3 PNP 40 with the H9 floats for it. My first flight on the water was almost a disaster. It has the Evolution 46 on it. It seemed to barley want to get up any speed. when it got going to what I thought was a good take off speed it came up and started to roll left and go steep up. It tip stalled to the left and I cut the power. It came down straight on the prop and bounced up on the floats and sat there. Thankfully no damage. I decided to put the wheels on and fly from the field first. Same thing on take off but I got it up and had to give it alot of right rudder trim and down elevator trim to fly straight. Flown it 4 times now and I am a little disappointed, I thought it would fly like a trainer but it is not at all. Im kind of scared of it and worried about the floats now. The plane looks straight and true but all the rudder trim worries me. You can see a lot of right rudder when it is just sitting there. Any suggestions or pointers here are welcomed. I really want to fly from the water. Thanks.

On your PNP Cub, what prop are you using? Also did you check you CoG? I had the exact plane, I flew it with a masterAirscrew 11x6, it sure didn't take any speed to get off the ground. In a light breeze, and I doing mean light, it took off in least than a foot of rollout. With the CoG at the recommend spot in the the manual. I intstalled my receiver pack balanced and flew, very little trimming wast required. I flew it on the first tank, it ran so well. This plane is a floater, it loves it in the air. I have since sold it, now that I fly my new Hanagar 9 1/4 Scale Cub.

I have a Goldberg Anniversary Cub about framed up, with the Goldberg floats. I decided to try electric and have a .61 size outrunner with 80 amp ESC. Batteries yet TBD. I notice, it seems, most of you do not have that vertical 'hang down' ventral thingy. Are there any comments as to the necessity of that thing. I'm thinking if I must have one, I'd like to try clear plastic. Want to fly mine on the river off my boat and didn't want the added fuel and big flight box.

I have heard guys say know, but I always add a sub rudder. I am new to water flying, I soloed off water in 69 with a Falcon 3 CH. with an st. 35 for power with scratch built floats.I have had a few cubs off water all had sub rudders. one was a Goldberg,with a 60 goldhead. an Goldberg floats

My cub is a great planes 40 size. I don't have a subfin and I don't think you really need one. If you look at ful scale planes some have them and some don't. If you choose not to use one you will need to use your rudder in turns so that the tail does not slip into the turn. I had the same floats on a decathalon and the same rang true...you need to use rudder in the turns.

what effect on the cub would it have if the two elevelator halves are missaligned - would it cause roll in level flight? I think I may not be the only one here that needs to recheck that..

Personally, I learned to fly a Goldberg Cub, built it thinking it was a trainer! The guys in my club, and my instructor, said the Cub ain't no trainer. But, I learned to fly with rudder, and fly everything with rudder. I know many guys fly aileron only, so maybe I can get by without the sub rudder dangly thingy. I prefer flying with rudder on the right stick-more like flying full size-at least to me.

Scary thing happend today, things got a little wet inside and I noticed all the glue turned white and got a little tacky, note to the public, not all ARF cubs make good float planes, I think mine was assembled with non waterproof elmers glue or the like. Either way Im going to fly it again and again till either I crash it from pilot error or it falls apart in the air.... I think the latter would be a spectacular site to see....

took the water rudder off (after breaking it on the first flight - by mis handeling it) and to my suprise no more aleron trim required for level flight and man did it fly good... It was probably out of lateral balance and the cg probably moved fordard a 1/2 inch when I took it off. flew it so much in one day - probably 10 -20min flights -and was having so much fun, and even drew a small crowd (hard to do in the adirondacks)... then as it started to get dark.... on the last flight (you know where this is going right?) receiver battery goes dead - hear it in the enging first, go into a banking dive for landing and go to pull up for flare and all control surfaces go flakey, needless to say it was a loud crash. Wing ripped out so there is some fuse damage but repairable.

Pics of the crash follow? Seems, though, Cubs are almost indestructable. What lesson did we learn here? I watched my first Cub making beautiful, wide sweeping, spiraling turns, as it disappeared into the mountains and landed in the highest tree in the forest. That bright yellow wing was a beacon through fall, winter, spring and the next summer, seen from the field........a constant reminder about checking the battery! (Did get the fuse, motor etc. down with a compound bow and string/rope at the end of an arrow...still have that fuse!) Good luck with the rebuild......remember the camera though!

Time to post a few pics of my first water flying.My plane is a scratch built PA19 super cub , 18 years old,with over 500 flights from the land.This year built some floats and took to the water.had so much fun didnt want to go home.The plane handled really well and no trim changes from flying with wheels on. power is OS46la,6ft w/s and all up weight 8 lbs with floats. We had our annual flyin in august and I won the pilots choice for float plane. So one pic shows me and the plane after prize giving. The other pic is the first taxi for the test fight with floats.Yes I did test on the day of the flyin. The other pic is after the first flight.Water flying is addictive.
