RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Hi all, I know this is a old thread but Im hoping that some of you are still following it, I have just aquired an old 108 inch kit with a fibreglass fuse, the fuse is partilally completed but the wings havent been started yet, The plans are really bad and aparently the incidence on this kit is way off, dose anyone out there have a plan of the wing only for a 108inch PBY? any help would be much appreciated.

Hello everyone I know this is an old thread but I am also looking to build a vintage rc pby I had the kit blown up from the 108" pby and cut years ago and now getting a chance to move forward with the project. I am looking for photos or advice on the build as I am in the process of ordering the rest of the wood to start. Also looking for any weak spots that might need extra reinforcement
Thank you
Thank you

Thank you for the link. Yes it is a bit different design. But has a very nice concept on construction with the sandwich formed frames with carbon fiber. I am not sure how much strength I need and if I build per plan will it be strong enough. I had the 108" plan blown up 247% and should give me a wingspan of 266" the idea was and is to use twin radial engines

I was originally going to build ageless engines 14 cylinder radial's however I am not a machinist and have since found evolution 7 cylinder gas engines instead. As for prop clearance I am estimating a 26" 3 blade. Based on the plans I should be close to 14" from the CL of the engine to fuselage it will be close

This project sounds really exciting!
I have a lot of PBY photos on my flickr site. Here is a link https://www.flickr.com/photos/sturla/albums. This PBY is as true to scale as I could possibly make it.
You can take a closer look at http://www.lasercutkits.com.au/product-category/plans and my PBY rebuild thread at rc groups. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2245875

Hello sturla,
Thank you for sharing your build I will no doubt be referencing your build. I also have seen a pby built by Stephen Thomas in a 1/5th scale. At this point I am in planning stages and developing a building plan as well as an order list. My problem is the largest I have built is a unionville Dhc-2

So with that said i am going to try and pull knowledge from my peers to accomplish this project. I know I need to strengthen the model I have all the main parts cut from 1/8 model plywood fairly lightweight so far. I am not sure how much weight I need to keep off Vs reinforcement of parts. I am going to use one piece a/c spruce for the fuselage inner stringers the frames are 4 piece and I can glue them but also thinking about glassing them on either side with 2 oz bi-ax cloth however I don't know if it needs the extra reinforcement. For planking the sides could I get away with 1/2 balsa or should I also use spruce countered sanded. And with sheeting can I use balsa sheets and glass over the entire plane. Will it add to much weight I plan on vacuum bagging the glass work to keep the resin ratio close to 1 to 1. If I do that what weight should I use on glass cloth should I substitute with Cf or Kevlar would there be any advantage to using either over an e-glass or s-2 glass
