RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Can't seem to load a word document for some reason. I have a chart someone worked out that shows scale to 1/5, 1/4, and 1/3 equivalents of flying wires from 6-40 to 1/2-20 threads, though I can't...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Looked over that site. Great little pieces of work! I printed out the Reeves fork end and measured the ends. The one on the left seems to print out at full scale and is a pretty obvious option. ...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Those are beautifully done, certainly adding to the truely scale appearance of a Pitts (or any other plane), and for those who can afford it and want to win competitions very necessary.

I've...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

I was just looking through the net and saw that boat turnbuckles cost $15 minimum each in the smallest size. And one airplane turnbuckle on eBay is listing with an original price of $40.

I...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Not a bad idea, a little springy, but it might work. I had one of those and I'll go to Lowe's and look at what they have there.

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Printed out the page and the top and 7th wire measure 1/2 " wide, so that would make the threads on the end about 5/16". I'm thinking that the reduction was probably 50% because I think those wires...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

I agree. When I can get to my other computer and shrink the file size down on my full-scale PuP photos, then I'll show what I saw at the museum. I got the info about cables and flat wires from that...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Wouldn't it be great to see how these flat and streamlined wires were produced. Make you wonder if they were rolled (probably) or drawn through a die (or dies). I could envision that the ends were...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

My limited research indicated that with the early planes, especially those with doubled wires, cables were used. As things developed, they changed to single streamlined wires. However, the many...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Nice work, especially on the eyes. How did you work that profile on the machine? I don't know whether to start with hex or flat stock and then mill/turn the threaded end down to size. The...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

Now THAT's what I'm talking about. Very nice work and gave me some ideas on for the eye and yolk. Certainly better looking than the DuBros'. What did you use for a reference for the profiles?

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

On my Pup they're definetly functional. They're there to hold the lower wing tight to the fuselage and connect the upper and lower wings together.

There are two 3/32" flying wires and two...

RE: New Updates! 1:1 scale Sopwith Pup and Fokker Triplane builds

I looked at those earlier today from your thread. They're "modern" compared with what I saw at the Air and Space Museum, but the eyes and other hardware I'm working on use the same basic profiles. ...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

I looked at the Proctor offerings, but when you compare them to a full-scale turnbuckle there are a lot of issues. The Kavan ones I hadn't seen but they're closer. From what I could eyeball on my...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

I've seen those pictures. The one of the old Strutter turnbuckle is a good example of what I'm talking about. I've seen other offerings, but none really fit the bill. I know how to use my TAIG...

RE: scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

I spent 3 years in Iraq, so I had a lot of deferred building time pent up when I got back. I got my kit in November and had it framed up by the middle of January. I decided on Stits covering,...

scale turnbuckles - is there a need?

I finished my 1/3 scale Balsa USA Sopwith Pup and was puzzled by the lack of turnbuckles and other rigging for this size model. I used the DuBro 1/4 scale turnbuckes, but while they are a very fine...

RE: New Updates! 1:1 scale Sopwith Pup and Fokker Triplane builds

I someone can send me scalable pictures of turnbuckles and the associated parts (best with a ruler next to them) then I'll try to see if I can make a scale copy of them. I think I could do 1/3 scale...

RE: 90 sized engine recommendation

Your experience with that company must be better than mine. I bought a 50cc gas engine from Tom Johnson at the AMA convention on the 9th. He said it would ship on the 11th. On the 20th I called and...

RE: Polishing aluminum cowl (1/3 Sopwith PuP)

Both are interesting, but using a Dremel winds up with smaller swirls. I tried it but it loads up the felt and fabric wheels too much to be very effective. I also tried Flitz, but that didn't...

Polishing aluminum cowl (1/3 Sopwith PuP)

I have a Balsa USA 1/3 Sopwith Pup and the aluminum cowl needed some cleanup and polishing. The finish had some striations running totally around the cowl and the front of the cowl had some pressure...

RE: The most common beginner flying mistakes

From my experience, the all to common right hand turn on landing death spiral is the worst thing to overcome for a beginner. You know, when they make the turn, and pull the elevator up when they're...

RE: Goop - useable at last!

Nope, I use silicon all the time. The acetic acid smell I know well. The GOOP I used smelled a lot worse and didn't stop smelling for over a week. I think there are a few different types of GOOP...

RE: Goop - useable at last!

GOOP is about the only adhesive I can't stand the smell of. Put a lot of it on something and the smell lasts for days if not longer.
