RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

LOL!

Good to see your post, Capt. Ron! Yep, as promised in our last phone conversation......Rip is back (not sure the "King" thing applies here unless I can, like, tax my subjects!).

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Hi Guys,

Sorry I've been quiet on this thread for so long; I took a long, voluntary sabatical from the hobby after 10 years of intensity, and am back building for, and planning my flying season!...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

I definitely prefer the steeper approach, flaps and gear down with about 1/3 throttle. She does NOT speed up on such steep descents due to the "barn doors" and it is impossible to stall a warbird...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

OK, to be fair, neither the diagram nor the original idea are mine. I found reference to this set-up somewhere else on RC Universe and applied it to Frankie.

When you then consider it, neither...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dan,

Good idea. Just put a 1/8" piece of ply with a matching hole for servo wires (or in my case, Robart air lines) over the existing balsa webbing and glass it to the ribs. Because I had...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dave,

30% could be a bit "hot" for a 220. I'd recommend checking the Saito forums to double-check before running it in this big thumper.

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dave,

Glad to hear the retention wire worked!

If memory is working, my 220 spins an 18x8 at ~8700 (static) using 20% (5000 ft. elevation).

Unloaded on a "rip" :) down the runway it's...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Well, I also split some of my top sheeting in that area with the bad landing, so I accessed it by cutting away the damaged sheeting from that rib space area. I believe you can also do this entirely...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Which reminds me, strengthening the gear blocks will make it harder for them to be ripped out, but on a hard landing they will transfer the energy thru themselves to a weaker part of the wing.

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

I did the same thing, only I used clear plastic from the LHS so I could visually check the servo linkages w/o removing the platform. See pic...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dan,

The obvious spots to reinforce the rails are "anywhere the rail touches a rib, leading edge bullnose or a spar/webbing". In the attached photo (took during my Robart gear upgrade; explains...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dave,

Steel "single-strand-wire" (as opposed to braided) used for picture hanging will work fine. Hobby Lobby and Michael's sells it coiled in a package. Such wire (100 lb test?) is fine: after...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

You know, that might have been a 1/16" drill bit, I forget. You can tell which one works better with the width of the hex face...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dave,

The wire won't help if you don't rigidly mount the cross-pipe to the engine-block using an external bracket that does not flex. The header nut and the single angle brace that are the stock...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dave, Jeff and Dan,

Great to see some activity on this thread again!

Stock gear IS crappy but worked for me for a couple of years before I upgraded to Robarts with aluminum wheels. Nice!

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

They do "rip" up the sky nicely together, Capt. Ron!

Warbirds Over Pueblo was great, as usual. You and the guys at Sky Corral put on a super event each year!

Looking forward to the next...

Capt. Ron!

Chris and I are really looking forward to "ripping and banking" down there this weekend; you guys always put on a terrific event.

It's going to be great when you and I dice it up...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

djstar,

I've never really noticed my Frankie's spinner temp after a flight as it's not a part of the plane I typically handle at that time. If I rotate the prop to horizontal so I can hold the...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Definitely 18x8! If I get her tuned correctly, she'll turn 8700 on the ground and probably 9000+ "unloaded" in flight.

When she's not "on the cam" as Kahlog mentions, it's just an OK pass.

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dan,

I have about 3 degrees down elevator mixed in with full flaps.

Once I complete base to final at about 50 feet, I point her nose down at a spot about 30 feet short of the runway and at...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dan,

I've not flown this 'Stang on a sim, but I believe the RealFlight giant P-51 is modeled on the Top Flite.

Regardless, the REAL Frankie slows down a LOT from full flaps, probably much...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Yes, both of my Robart struts eventually ended up 90 degrees to the ground, but in order to accomplish that my (counter-sunk, and reinforced from underneath) gear rails are oh-so-slightly-tapered,...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Hi Dave,

Nope, I was running a 6v Rx battery and a 4.8v (w/ voltage regulator) battery for the stock retract 791 servos.

I removed that second, 4.8v battery when I went over to the...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Correct, the 220 is at 3.5 HP. The FG36 is at 3.0 HP, which admittedly is not a huge difference. They can be fickle to tune, I've heard. They also weight 22 oz. MORE than a 220 (without accounting...

RE: New Hangar 9 1.50 P-51 Build

Dan,

Welcome to the squadron and feel free to bug us with questions!

I'm not a gasser expert, but since I wouldn't want to fly Frankie with any less power than the Saito 220 in mine offers,...
