Besides bending the shaft, I've never killed an electric motor. Even going nose in I just clean the dirt out and they seem to work good as new.

Yes, relying on your LVC is a bad idea as by the time it goes off you've already discharged your battery too far. Seems most guys are running each cell down to no less than 3.7 volts.
