I did just that with my older Rhinos. Use the manual to determine how many rpms is half of the thrust, then put a curve in the transmitter so half stick gives you the desired rpm

it is not harmful to your engine but you may have difficulty refilling it. CO2 extinguisher works as well, easier to buy, much cheaper and easy to get refilled.

I and others have had the same, started a year ago with a known issue BVM had. they did a repair but it did not work. I have been a big BVM fan for 20 years but I use a different brake valve now.
