RE: Wing Mold

What sort of surface coating are you guys using on your raw MDF (chipboard) wing molds? In the past I've had problems with pulling chunks out of the molds when removing the cured part.

Thanks...

Rhino V. Solidworks?

I just used a bitmap background to try to trace in rhino, but it pales in comparison to the representation that AutoCad gives the raster images. In rhino the image is very choppy. I'm working with...

Rhino V. Solidworks?

ptxman, tell me more ;)

What is the procedure for importing a raster image into Rhino?

Thanks.

Rhino V. Solidworks?

I use a composite of AutoCad and Rhino. I like AutoCad because of it's ability to import raster images such as technical drawings or 3-views. For scale models, I can use AutoCad to trace complex...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

Hey David,

Do you guys still have your report for Spirit of Monty online? I wanted to reference a few things. The link is no longer there on the main DBF page.

Thanks

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

I was thinking the same thing when reading the rules. Just dumping the water seems rather easy. From last year's contest, it seems like getting things to fall off of the airplane isn't a problem ;)

I guess, but you're looking at some HUGE UAV's to carry any significant amount of water. Dropping a gallon of water on a fire would be akin to spitting on it. I'm not sure if I want to see heavy...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

This one looks like a lot of fun. Even though my team had the best assembly time of any team last year, I'm glad to see that aspect gone. We must have spent nearly 50% of our building time on...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

Also, did anyone catch Virginia Tech destroying their own airplane? Apparently they were so displeased with it that they smashed it to bits with a hammer and hacksaw. I don't like laughing at...

David,

Thanks for the comments. .

I wish I would have talked to more people too. I just mostly silently observed other teams' entries. I didn't want to ask too many questions and seem...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

I had a great time. It was my first year at the competition and I learned a lot.

I was a crew chief for MSU's plane, and I didn't get much rest. Our pilot landed a bit short of the runway on...

Prop Length VS Cowl/Fuse Width

David,

I believe that you're correct in saying that wing loading has a lot to do with scaling factors. I mean just look at the wing loading of a lightly-loaded full scale aircraft such as the...

Prop Length VS Cowl/Fuse Width

Damnathius,

The CL values that I used in this equation have been taken at absolutely Zero AOA, and it is completely independent of a certain aircraft's wing incidence. If the Sig Cub has to fly...

Prop Length VS Cowl/Fuse Width

David,

Thanks for bringing that up, and it was certainly accounted for in my calculations.

The UIUC airfoil database offers polars for the Clark-Y at various Reynolds numbers. I chose the...

Mathematical equations are the only way to quantify the argument. Otherwise, you are offering nothing but heresay. The equation that I presented came straight from a Flight Mechanics textbook and...

fixed tail wheel or castering tail wheel

It depends on the area of the rudder of you ask me. With a fully castoring tailwheel, you will be using bursts of power to maneuver the plane on the ground. Only the aerodynamic forces produced by...

Prop Length VS Cowl/Fuse Width

I am not sure why some are so insistant that a plane cannot fly without positive AOA. Most cambered airfoils will continue to produce lift even to a negative AOA. This zero-lift AOA is what matters...

Re: Power system

Jeremy,

I originally installed angled plates in an attempt to direct the inlet air around the sides of the batteries, but those have since been removed. I also cut louvers in the tops of the...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

Oh, and what power system are y'all using, Jeremy? We're using the Astro 60 geared on ~36 2400 mah cells. We get about 11 lbs of thrust from this setup, and it lasts for nearly 5 minutes.

Oh, and by the way, our school wanted to do a twin-boom design like yours for optimal antenna placement, but it is in defiance of the rules to have part of the aircraft's structure obscure the 360...

Yes, the inlets are for battery cooling. The batteries used to be placed above the box in the fuselage, but we encountered a nasty tip-over problem on the ground because of the high CG. ...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

Jeremy,

Sorry to hear about the bad landing. I'm glad to hear it survived though. Sounds like your plane is a bit more durable than ours. When we picked up the remains of our first aircraft, we...

Good news (for us anyways)

Today, after 2 weeks to the hour since the big boxes of balsa arrived, we have flown our 2nd DBF competition aircraft. She handles beautifully and completed all...

UIUC AIAA Design/Build/Fly Project

Hey guys..

It looks like we'll be a predicted 2.25 pounds under the weight of the last plane after concluding my work for the night. I got the wings covered and trimmed and we're closing in on...
