I think what you are referring to is the strapping used to stablize the ribs from side to side movement. Longerons spanning the wing were also used to stablize the ribs.

They did some pretty wonderous engineering in the eighteen and early nineteenth century, not just aircaft. Everthing would have had to be taken into account. Ok almost everything... Someone forgot...
