RE: Qualifying planes

No... the wingspan determines the scale of the model, say 27%. Now once the scale is set, all other dimensions such as length, height, stab span, wing chord, etc must also be 27% of the full scale,...

RE: Qualifying planes

If the Super Skybolt is within 10% of scale, it'd be legal (2nd one down): http://www.execulink.com/~gca/sub/aircraft.htm

Same deal for the 260 of course, although I've never seen or heard of...

Ocala, FL IMAC - Oct. 20-21

Just wanted to let everyone know about the IMAC contest coming up in Ocala, FL on October 20-21. This is the only IMAC contest in FL in the fall (except the Regionals which you must qualify for), so...

Ocala, FL IMAC Contest

Hey everyone, our IMAC contest in Ocala, FL is coming up in a few weeks (October 14 & 15, 2006). Hope plenty of people can make it and enjoy a good, fun weekend at one of the best flying sites in the...

RE: Side Force Generators

I have several Tensors and do appreciate how they work. Like indicated in my earlier post, I believe side force generators (by definition) are not intended to affect the directional stability one...

RE: Side Force Generators

I was under the impression that the very purpose of these devices was to increase the side force capability without affecting the directional stability. Hence, they are placed essentially on the CG.

RE: Direct Drive System

One potential benefit of this system would be that you lose the nonlinearity associated with our current arm/pushrod/horn setups. With zero expo on a direct drive system, the surface should move...

Stanford Wing Analysis Program

Stanford's website has a wing analysis program on it's website (http://aero.stanford.edu/WingCalc.html) which plots the Cl across the half span of a single tapered wing at a given angle of attack. ...

RE: Best servo for pitch??

I've used both HS-55 and CS-4.4 servos for pitch on VPP's and both performed fine with proper mechanical advantage. Use an inboard hole on the servo arm and it should have the 'oomph' needed for...

RE: SETTING UP Your New VPP

Hey Wade, how much thrust are you getting at 8-9A on the EVP/2208/34 combo and approximately how much pitch are you using (either by pitch angle or distance from hub to slider)? Is that on a 3S or...

RE: RBM Extra 260 35% for IMAC

I won the NATS in Advanced with it (when it was still TBM, not RBM - I assume it's the same basic design). Very nice flying 35%er... I loved the way it snapped.

RE: Knife edge balance point?

Larry is right. If there is too much side area in front of the CG, it will be destabilizing (wanting to increase sideslip angle once one is put in, as you described). Either move the CG forward, or...

RE: Horizontal Stab placement for downwash

I figured Dick would bring up foamies, haha.

Anyways, I'm not particularly concerned with hovering. More the effects of the stab/downwash in upright cruise flight versus inverted when talking...

Horizontal Stab placement for downwash

Most of the mid-wing aerobatic designs (Edge, Extra 260, Laser, etc.) have the wing chord, thrustline, and stab chord almost inline, but usually the stab is raised slightly. On a conventional plane,...

RE: Quietest prop for 3W100

I used a 26x12 AirModels 3 blade when I flew a DA-100 on a TBM 35% Extra 260... I really liked that prop, at least for a light plane like that.

Here's some pics of the graphics I just put on my Enforcer Aviation Yak-54. Needless to say, a LOT easier than painting complex shapes and fades! Thought yo might like to see...

RE: How to create 0 up down balance?

Hey Dick,

I'm sure some of the spiraling airflow could be blocked by the vertical fin, resulting in more force UP on the left stab than there is force DOWN on the right stab, resulting in a...

RE: How to create 0 up down balance?

For the vertical placement of the CG, I would base that on hovering (assuming no up/down thrust) because KE coupling arises from many many other things. Most planes you'll find you have to hold a...

RE: Aileron Differential

mulligan, I was referring to a symmetrical airfoil (thought it went without saying with a competition aerobatic plane), and as I stated, zero incidence, zero up/down thrust, etc, implying zero AoA on...

RE: Aileron Differential

But if the plane is flying a perfect vertical downline, and the incidence is 0, etc. adverse yaw would not be a factor since the wing is not generating a net lift (the lift - and therefore drag -...

RE: Aileron Differential

To deepen the discussion a bit...

Why do some 'neutral' aerobatic planes (0 wing incidence, 0 tail incidence, center-hinged surfaces, etc.) also exhibit the need for differential? When fine...
