I agree, colored packing tape works great. You can "iron" it on to shrink it after application too. I spray a light "misting" of spray adhesive on the floats first to help the tape "stick" better,...

Bummer! Those mounts are plywood aren't they? Looks like you will have to do some "bailing wire & duct tape" type of construction and rebuild or repair the ones you have. I'll remember your travails...
