I think that for photography it is a different set of skill that you need. you don't need to know how to 3D fly. you need to be able to fly very smooth. if you are just going ot be doing stills...

I learned to hover using Non-heading hold (rate) gyro. I liked learning that way. I never used a heading hold till after I learned forward flight.

They are not training gear but they do help stablize the bird in the air mostlly because of the weight. The down side is that it eats fuel a little quicker but it looks very cool doing a stall turn....
