RE: wing building

Iagree with the others that the F4U might not be a good idea for a first plane.
But don't let that stop you from building one (or two). The more you built the better they will become.

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Sorry for the late reply. Didn't have a scale at hand which measures above 2kg. It did took me a week (shame shame) to figure out how I would measure the AUW with enough precision.
Finally realized...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Last weekend, I performed the 2nd maiden, now in its final completed state. Ihad removed the dummy engine (cardboard printout) which I had installed for the display, and put back on the master...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

So, if you take the existing plans and use them as starting point to draw your own, adding main gear retract attachment points, wheel wells, flaps, retracting tailwheel. Modify the whole fuselage to...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

The other day, for its 35th birthday, our club had organized a display of models and an indoor-demo.
First "show" of my corsair between other models. As not to risk any hangar rash or mishap during...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

It's been a while since last post, but I finally can say that Imade a succesfull maiden today, although the plane is far from being completed.

It took me a long time to figure out how to get the...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

With the rear of the plane almost completed, except a small part needs to be sheeted +covering, I went ahead to balance the plane (with landing gear retracted).
Didn't use any balsa blocks in the...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

In order to know which battery to order (weight) and its location, I had to finalize the fuselage to get an idea how it would balance on CoG.
Started with the sheeting of the fuselage.

Total...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

The wing is completed, all controls are installed and finetuned.
Only need to cover the bottom center ... but I'm out of white oratex for the moment.
I had waited with sheeting the fuselage until...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Started covering the wing. First time using oratex.
My previous covering jobs with oracover were satisfactory, but not always perfect. This oratex material is harder to apply.
Maybe I didn't use...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

I haven't posted in a while, but that didn't stop me from working on the corsair.
Things went slow, as getting "details" done always takes longer than the raw framework.
Anyway, got some cheap...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Other projects and the actual flying sessions have slowed down the build.
I finally settled for tabs between the center and inner flaps, and found the time to complete both sides.
Now I still need...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

One week later and the left side flaps are built (still need to add the top layer sheeting).

I'm experimenting with how the center flap will take the inboard flap along. I have seen people use a...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

I have been quiet for a while, although I did continue working on the corsair during this silence. It just didn't feel right at that moment to post about the progress.

I wasn't happy with the...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Continued working on the fuselage, finally started gluing parts.
Not sure if the original kit used a fuselage crutch, but Idecided to make one which will form the battery bay. Afterwards Ithen only...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Reworked the rear fuselage to allow more room for the control rods and retract unit.

New formers F8, F9 and F10, as well as new spine and belly longerons.
In the last picture you'll notice in...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

That is a very generous offer from you. I'm sure I would regret if not accepting it.
If it's OK with you that these will not be installed on this current build, but on a later one which I'll try to...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

To find out where to route the elevator and rudder control rods I needed to have a rough idea what space the tail wheel retract unit would take.
So, for a few days I worked on the retract unit...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

Thank you.

Continued on the elevator.
When drawing and cutting the templates for the tail feathers I made a mistake.
I removed 2x 6mm from the elevator LE to put a double layered balsa LE for...

RE: Marutaka F4U Corsair 61 -Electric ScratchBuilding-

The cat is called "Mokka" and I usually don't allow her to sit on the desk. She usually sits on the ground, next to my chair when I am building.
As the desk was rather empty, due to this new project...
