The backbone or longeron is a fairly thick but light 1/2" aluminum tube (or pipe). I chose the pipe over other things because everything depends on that one piece. If that longeron bent, broke or...

I found a piece of thick wall 1/2" aluminum tubing for the backbone. Because everything is attached to that longeron I worried about getting a kink in something thin wall. Looking into using...

1/4 scale Dormoy Bathtub

I'm about to start a build of the Dormoy and, looking at the plans, the main (only) longeron appears weak. Thought about using a dowel but there is a high possibility of it warping. How about a...

Propeller mounting

Just got a ARF electric Cesna and I'm trying to mount the prop correctly. The instructions say %^&*^% or something like that! The motor shaft is threaded and the prop came with three nuts and one...

RE: RCU is really starting to suck

Have not been here too long but it's free. I'm also on several other sites for other "special interest" groups and they are also free. Lots of infor on these sites and find them invaluable during...

RE: Wing covering

Didn't mean to start a todo just wanted inside.  Seems to me that the process should go...1.perimeter, 2. heat gun the center, 3.  seal the covering to the ribs.  The last step locks everything in...

Wing covering

Before covering my wing I did some research and watched several videos. Very informative but I may have missed something. Basicly the instructions say to seal the edges and then shrink the middle....

As stated earlier I had to take something apart that was put together with 5 minute epoxy and it just snapped apart without taking any wood with it.  Looks like the price of fast is weak.  I think...

RE: Which glue

Ok, 30 minute epoxy it is. Hossfly, I like the idea of using dowels which I will do. already put gussets on the longerons that will double as anchor points for the rigging. I do have a thing about...

Which glue

I'm about to mount the tail feathers onto the basswood longerons of my Elder 40. Got this mental immage of the elevator dangling by the pushrod at 30 feet. Which glue to use? Researched the different...

We are in the same boat, it's been 40 years for me. Getting educated again is a real uphill battle. Been reading everything I can, searching the web and talking to people at the local field helps...

Interesting direction on this thread...all good information.  Regarding the twist, I like what JohnBuckner said about adding gussets to the inside of the braces.  I can drill a hole in the gussets...

RE: Fuse twist

There are several Elder 40 build threads on this site.  The strings (truss work) is non structual art work.  Longerons and braces are all basswood.  Can't add "X" braces because the dowel pushrods...

RE: Fuse twist

It's a standard Elder 40 with the back open so there is no way I can put gussets around the braces and cross bracing is out because of the pushrods.  I like the idea of scoring the basswood to give...

May have run into a regluing problem.  I used 5 minute epoxy to glue the braces on the Basswood longerons.  After removing the braces and sanding as best I can there is still some epoxy soaked into...
