I just have the plan, not the kit. I was thinking of doing exactly what you wrote- build to plans using harder wood. Does the kit supply precut wood or just sheets of balsa from which to cut your own...

Thank you for the responses. It turns out that the plane I was planning, the Consolidated PT-1, is available in kit form in 1/12 scale. Could I use the heavier covering safely with that?
