You are lucky that it was a NiMh battery. By cutting both battery wires at the same time with a scissor you created a shortcircuit. A Lipo battery can explode if you do this.

This 550 motor mounted on a WK with 96T spur and 28T pinion leaves enough clearance till the battery box. A 24T pinion can be used. In this case the motor will just touch the battery box.
