RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Thanks rtk. I have sold the engine locally (with full disclosure) and the new owner does not have it in a plane right now. As I look back on this problem, I wonder how much the ambient air...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Thanks, Raven3. I'm certain that my red phenolic block was not leaking, so it must be some other aspect of this part that causes the problem. Is the new aluminum part the same size and shape as the...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I never solved the problem. Bought another 100 cc engine and sold the old one to a friend locally here (with full disclosure of the history). He's finishing up a 35% extra. He doesn't do the type...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Agreed, Silversurfer. But the balsa box also had no effect. I like your idea of the plastic cap over the hole and am willing to try it. I've tried everything else anyway.

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Thanks so much Norm. Let me know how much and what payment method.

SilverSurfer - thanks also for your idea, but I have already been all around that area. I tried a balsa box on the regulator...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Well on the second flight today (85 degrees) the engine quit when I opened the throttle after an elevator (extended idle followed by a quick opening of the throttle. Engine was 230 degrees at the...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

My problem is suddenly solved today. For the past three months (as long as I have been fighting this issue), the air temperature has been around freezing (30 - 40 degrees F). Today it is 75 degrees...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

One of my buddies has the same engine that I have (3W100). It does not exhibit the behavior. So I am still perplexed. We flew on the same afternoon a couple weeks ago - similar planes and the same...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Thanks, ralph. I suspect if you open the low up enough, the engine would run somewhat even if the HS is totally shut. I'm going to start over with both NV opened 1.5 turns. I know you're in a...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I'm still having the same issues. Weather here was finally good enough to get out this weekend. about 40 degrees and windy. I fly along at a fast idle (4000 rpm). roll inverted. engine slows to...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Excellent work, enormydude. I'll make a similar device. What material did you use? Any further tips on making such a device?

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Finally got to fly some flights today after being grounded for four weeks with cold weather. Engine quit twice in the air on 5 flights. Running along at 4000 rpm, I roll inverted. Engine...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I think enormydude has this figure out. Still too cold to fly here (about 20 degrees F). Full puddling between the reeds and the crankcase.

3dsky - yes this engine has been is a few crashes....

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Thanks for the comments 3dsky. I think you're right about the "pros" jockeying the throttle quite a bit, never leaving it at idle for very long. Weather here (St. Louis) has been too cold to fly...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I have inspected the reed valves and they appear good. No chips, or curls. But with the engine in the normal orientation (carb hanging from the bottom), there is plenty of opportunity for fuel to...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Very good question, soarrich. I'm not convinced that the engine ever did run upside after extended idle. Nor am I convinced that anyone elses motor will do the same thing (idle right side up for 20...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I sent it to Aircraft International for service a couple months ago (for bent crank). It has only been flown a few hours since then.
I'm a stubborn do-it-yourselfer who wants to believe I can sort...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

The carb does not have any indication on it as far as a model number or part number. I measure the bolts as 1.23 inches apart. (Perhaps this is actually 1.25 inches?). Weather here is too cold to...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I bolted on the Walbro Carburetor and set the NV both at 1.25 turns open. Engine started up and ran fine. Before even adjusting the needle valves, I picked up the fuselage and rolled it to the left...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Jack1933 - thanks for yet another idea. I have inspected the reeds closely for cracks, curl, etc and there is no visible damage. I received my Walbro carb today and will be fitting it to the 3W...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Bamapilot - I've already ordered just the carb, so I'll see how this works out. May arrive here tomorrow. Weather here in st louis is going to be quite cold the next couple days. My old 3W has...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

Jeff at Desert Aircraft says the Walbro carburetor that they sell for the DA 100 will bolt right on the the 3W 100 and it is only $46. The Tillotson carb from Aircraft International is $120. So...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

I'm beginning to think that may be there is nothing wrong with my engine / carburetor and that loading up at idle is a characteristic that I have to live with. I am planning to fly some more and...

RE: 3W 100 quits in Knife Edge

WRK gave me some ideas to try. Here's the results: Start the engine, let it warm up at idle. rotate it left and it dies within a couple seconds. Repeat, but this time clear the engine good just...
