You would think it would but the ESC going up in smoke is a come problem with running 3s and sometimes even on 2s it goes puff... I am not sure about the replacement. My son and I both have first...

It is better to use 2s for bashing and 3s for pavement speed runs also you need to adjust your gearing for 3s.

Yep, you ran it on 3s in the grass. I personally would get a battery with a "MAH" of at least 5000. Also call HPI and they will replace it for you.
