GarySS... This picture may help you. I'm using a flex pipe instead of a muffler, so I had to tap a nipple on the 90-degree header. You can see the check valve in the line near the nipple/header.

Actually, the engine HAS been broken in on a test stand and the valves re-adjusted as per the instruction manual. Then I had it running on the test stand a few more hours. That was a few years ago....
