RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Far North Queensland.

Queensland being the North East state of Oz (Australia).

But you knew that already....just like Paris is in Texas....

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Depends on a number of factors but it's not unusual to straighten engine parts.

Many moons ago (pre-internet) I worked at an automotive engine rebuilding company and we used to straighten bent...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I've fixed several non-Saito's with broken con-rods or cranks. Assuming no other internal damage just replace it and try again. Can't see why a Saito would be any different.

If you have any...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

You can rarely believe the rev limits advertised for model aircraft engines.

As one example, look up the rev ranges for the 40LA versus the 46AX. Both have very similar rev ranges (16000rpm)...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I've only been flying for just over a decade. I had a second hand FP25 but never got to use it beyond a bench run.

Lately I've been flying a Minimag with a Cox .049. They're a little easier on...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Just to be annoying, would you be able to confirm my number? If I don't have one, I'm happy to take the next available one.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

When rebuilding some second hand 45's the previous owner said they were worn out, it turned out to be nothing more than a gummed up rings.

Strip and clean the engine, maybe put in new bearings...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Generalities follow....

Somewhere between 0.04 and 0.1mm is common to most 4 stroke model engines. Personally, I set to 0.06 as that puts it somewhere in the middle (and it suits my feeler...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I would highly recommend a bearing separator along with your 2 or 3 jaw puller. It's not expensive and definitely turns the job into a 1 minute exercise. If you search back through the thread you'll...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Are referring to the 'split' on the brass section, that is the spray bar. It is meant to be there.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Can anyone advise on the power difference between an old Saito 45 and the later (but early model) 45S? I have an Eindecker that flies fine with the 45 but has nothing left in reserve, I also have a...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I'm no Saito expert but a club member had an R3 radial (not sure the size). One cylinder dropping out was very common until the engine was fully run in. Despite lots of bench running with and without...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

If it's spitting spinners and/or props, that is generally an indication of running the engine excessively lean (low and/or high speed needle). Richen it right up and then try getting the needles...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I've done this myself, albeit not with a Saito engine. Engine was a 61 sized four stroke. The engine has been out of the mounts twice (once to swap to a new fuselage). Provided the holes are drilled...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

90% of engine mounts available in my part of the world are glass reinforced plastic (or similar). They don't crush unless you get ridiculous tightening the engine retaining bolts (which most people...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

That's true, but you'll also see some valve seat wear/recession which can offset the widing gap. It's all theoretical until someone scientifically monitors it over time.

With most glow engines,...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I would highly recommend getting the right bearing pullers. Sure they cost but they aren't that expensive and the time they save is well worth it. A two or three jaw puller combined with a bearing...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I highly recommend investment in the bearing separator. It'll turn a sometimes painful job into a breeze and avoid any risk of damaging the motor. Of course, you'll also need a 2 or 3 jaw puller to...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I will do that soon as I need to swap the engines in my Eindecker. So while they are both out I can take the pics.
