Stop thinking of your old Kaos and other Seventies models and look at today's 3D ARFs.

The new models have inverted engines with the fuel tank center line far above...

I suspect that your estimation of where the tank was in relation to the engine is off by a gross amount. It is easy to do this when you cannot see the tank.
