RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

There is nothing wrong with the older version case and or cylinder design. The crankshaft bearings were changed at about serial # 650, anything after that is just fine. Even of those engines with...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

The crank twisted when the front 1/2 stopped instantly and the back 1/2 tried to keep going, thats why the rear 1/2 of the case wobbles when it turns over and why it wouldn't turn smooth imediately...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Other than the prop explosion as a wake up call for running engines on a stand or on a plane this is no big deal.

I know the OP knows what happened to this engine, you would have to be blind not...

Sure does, and there's pieces of bearing cage stuck the wall of the case. That's why I asked for pictures of the front 1/2 of the case and the crankshaft, not sure why they can't be made available.

The current version DLE engines are far and away on a higher level in design and performance from where they began.

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

You're thinking glow engine technology. There is no taper in any gas engine cylinder. This engine ran for just under 1 minute and 40 seconds, there is not enough time to make enough heat toget it...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

How would the prop blowing up introduce small broken pieces of metal into the crankcase?

The engine will run smoother and at a lower RPM with a prop installed but it is in no way a requirement to...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Sorry but that is not an inner bearing race. It's a cage that holds the rollers in place, the end of the crankshaft is the inner race for the bearing. That is the older version of the engines...

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

All very good information TOM and I agree but in this case it seems clear the engine stopped then the prop exploded. I've seen engines shed props and none of them quit like that, they kept running...

I see no reason the user shouldn't tear it down if he wants to, my customers do it all the time. It's a DLE, if it's defective it will be warrantied and replaced by the factory no questions asked.

RE: DLE-111 first start... warranty used, but things are looking good.

Prop bolts shearing off or a prop failure will not cause an engine to quit period, the prop bolts shearing and prop explosion in this video was an effect not a cause. What I saw in the video;
