Maybe a stupid idea but have you thought about using an electric drill chuck and chuck key
for you 90 degree gears?

Dunno if you seen these, and i think its brazing rather than welding.
But from the demo videos it seems to make a pretty strong join.
Some of the torches can use LPG gas straight from ya BBQ gas...
