My standard for such things is to brush with epoxy finishing resin, with a relatively wet coat, so its shiny when cured. I did the tank bay, the area ahead of the engine, and the area under the...

I did tip lights, "rotating beacon" lights top and bottom and a landing light in the nose. The beacons look good on the ground. Everything else is hardly noticeable during the day.

OTOH, I...

I have one in my R54, and am quite happy with it. Simple to install (everything is internal but the fuel pump and battery and optional data terminal), runs really well, light and low fuel...

I have done glass and paint for almost as light as Monokote (about 1/4 oz per square foot of surface area). You have to be really careful, do a lot of sanding, and most importantly, do a light...

I had high hopes of paint on film covering being an easy way to a painted finish. (hours of filling and sanding fiberglassed wood is not my favorite thing to do!). What I really wanted to do was...

Some paint sticks to Monokote.. sort of. You need to do a good job of solvent cleaning the monokote first, and preferably have scuffed off some of the gloss. In general, the paint will scratch...

I totally agree with this, but put them as secondary causes. If the orbiter would have been on top of the stack, the O ring failure would have cost the mission, but not the crew. (orbiter would ...

Well, depends on your goals. Airplanes in flight will never get much of a shear load on the bolts, its really only landing situations. Then you can either have the bolts fail to protect the rest...

Thats probably a shear load, not tension. Whole different problem. OTOH, what I have normally seen is a pile of rubble surrounding intact bolts.

That was yield, rounded off. But ultimate...

I am sure Bruce has his stories too on this, but about 20 years ago, I did a kit design for a company, and all of the "difficult" tech support calls got forwarded to me. It was amazing how much...

I have never really looked at the performance of the airfoil, but its not really symmetric, and its probably going to make a bit more lift upright than inverted. So there is more margin there.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Congrats! Moving the servos back was the reason for some of the extra nose weight. But, as you found out, its not much of an issue on an R54 until you get really absurdly heavy.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Oh... 600 grams of ballast plus batteries... thats not unusual. Batteries plus 900 grams would be a bit heavy.

Over 11 lbs for the fuselage depends on how much over. But it should fly just...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

whats the total (dry) weight? I started out flying my 21 lb (dry) R54 with a 14 lb thrust Wren 54 Mk 3.. did just fine and thats only a little bit more thrust than your P60.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

I recently added a GPS to my R54... looks like my pull-ups/vertical climbs are about 1500 to 1800 ft, and GPS top speeds (not airspeeds) are in the 160 to 180 mph range (probably on the downhill...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

You would at least HOPE the "60" was bigger than the "50"! I measured several of the DuBro large tanks back then, and some of them were reasonably close to the marked size, and some were larger.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Maybe not that much larger. The DuBro 50 is actually quite a bit larger than 50 oz. I measured it and posted the number here a long time ago, post 680 (from 2005!)

I measured the "50" oz...

Sorta like this! This is the large Xicoy ring, I think its the 110mm one, with their controller. Works great, Realistic flicker as it comes on, but I have not noticed that part in the air. Its...

Hmm.. mine is a bit the other way. With landing flap, it gets a bit sensitive in the flare and I have to be careful or it "pops up". I am sure that CG location is a big part of it. Mine is at the...

Grant,

I went to dual elevators with separate servos. I just like redundancy on a plane like this. Once I had that, and was about to glue the tail on, I decided to do the anhedral, which I...
