I would imagine a little hotter only because it will go quicker. The batteries themselves will run cooler. what it does mean is you can gear down a tooth or two and get the same speed but hopefully...

My guess as to why is that that the battery can not deliver the amps the esc and motor want to pull. What lipo's (mah and C rating) do you have? from my understanding of lipos once it starts...

You are correct they are 1.2v per cell but when fully charges they will peak at around 1.4v per cell. I know this have I have frequetly charged my 7cell 8.4v NiMHs past 8.4v. They won't stay there...

Go for the Mamba ESC with VXL motor. If you don't car about being able to tune your esc then the velineon system (esc and motor) is great.
