RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Here's what it looks like after the two layers of lite ply give up.

If you look from the top down, you see the foam/balsa sheeting that "supports" the upper quarter.
You can't see the balsa...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Hope they also changed the two layer liteply firewalls that have little or no support behind their upper area.

Make sure to inspect the firewall and for the quality of the wood. Two plys of...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

It's interesting that the most recent photos of the latest ARF shipped shows the mfg has changed the colors a bit. I wonder if they ran out of the brilliant blue. It looks like navy blue or black...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Only problems with fuel flow is when I've got uniflow plumbed poorly and get siphoning and that's not a muffler problem.

OK, I just ran down to the shop and looked into the cowling. The...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

I'm fairly certain the Bison would fit the same, only needing a hole for the pipes. I've got Bisons in a couple of other close cowls and it takes up about the same area as a Slimline.

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Did the cowl have to be cut?

I use an OS61 in my Skybolt. Got an older style Slimline Pitts muffler on it. Had to cut a hole through the bottom of the cowl for the two pipes to stick out. ...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Liteply is an extremely variable material because of the type wood the middle ply is made from. It can be fairly strong. It can also be worthless. And worst of all, it can vary greatly in each...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Marco, your picture shows a reinforced firewall. Those vertical pieces do quite a bit to resist vibration and stiffen the upper area that's almost unsupported. Both the vertical plate and the...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

BTW, see the cowling in the background of the picture? That is the original. A couple of minor cracks was all that happened.

The firewall was failing in use. What caused the rest of the...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Jeez, are you kidding? ;) The pictures of that firewall must be far enough back that you missed them.

It is basically not very strong. It's made of two layers of light ply, which really...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

The original often hefted near 10 pounds dry. Very few people back then flew much larger engines. I really don't remember ever seeing a kit Skybolt with anything other than a 60 on it. And it...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

I just looked at the Skybolt down in the shop and.............

That picture was taken with a prop that's actually closer to 12.5" than 12.75". I have a selection of some of my most often used...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Here is my Skybolt with a 12.75" prop on it. It's got about 2.5" clearance on a vinyl floor. Our field is grass and that prop is no longer clean and pretty. Well, actually, that prop is no...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Ask yourself a couple of questions and you have your own answer.

How much does your engine weigh compared to an average 60 2Cycle?

Will the prop that's going to suit your engine have...

This is an issue that perfectly shows the beauty of our hobby. Very often two entirely different things work...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Here's what happens with the OEM setup.

When you move the TX stick, both the aileron servos in the lower wings move the aileron they're rigged to whatever your TX stick movement tells them to. ...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

Unfortunately, the differential comes from the rigging. With either the OEM rigging or my suggested rigging, the lower ailerons move equally both up and down. The differential results from just...

Oh yeah, that first attached picture above isn't a depiction of either the Skybolt or the Ultimate. I made it up just to show what the ideal right angled rigging would need to be. The green dotted...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

With the stock setup, there will be differential, and it will vary on the uppers depending on whether they're going up or going down.

The basis of that is the basis of a major cornerstone of...

RE: Super Skybolt ARF

My Skybolt flies awesome with an OS61. There really are only a couple of 3 blades available for any engine size. That's a 12x6(3) Master Airscrew in the picture. It's one of the props the 61 does...
