RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Oriole,

Bend a small bracket and secure it behind one of the front motor mount bolts.

Valve Floater,

It sounds like your tail gear may not be adjusted properly, or maybe bent? The...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I used a bellcrank and two short pieces of 4-40 rod. From the choke linkage, one rod goes forward to the bellcrank, the other goes down from the bellcrank even with the front of the cylinder head. ...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I had my maiden yesterday. The plane flies great, as always, with the typical down trim. A link to the video is below, courtesy of Terry Farmer and WylieWarbirds. If you watch closely, you can see...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I'm running a 23x10 Xoar WWII prop. It turns around 6,800 if I remember correctly. Motor is brand-spanking new. Idles great.

That's the first I've heard about your Warbird event in Austin. ...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Hi Guys,

I just finished a TF P-51 I picked up from a friend. It was an RTC that was glassed and partly primed. It had the Spychalla cowl blended in. Looks great, but I was worried I wouldn't...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Correction to my "simple solution". I replaced the 4-40 rods with 2-56 on my Hangar 9 P-51 (150 size; 7 or 8 pounds lighter), not the TF Mustang. On the TF, it only took cleaning up the exit holes...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

My solution was much simpler; maybe a bit wimpy, but has worked fine for many flights now. I threw away the 4-40 control rods and used 2-56. They were just flexible enough to not bind on the...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

That's my plane in post 1559 (or at least it was my plane). Admittedly, it WAS a pretty hard landing with a nose-over after the collapse. At the time, I didn't want to repair it and the wing set...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I didn't find it to be overly loud. You knew the engine was running !! We never measured the dB, but everyone thought it sounded pretty cool.

That should have said: "If someone wants the cracked wing....."

Sorry,

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Hi All,

I've gone back and forth on this, but Saturday morning I ordered a 2.12 meter comp arf as the new home for my DA-50. After only 5 1/2 flights, I'm out of the big warbird business after...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I used JR DS821s at 6VDC all the way around. Seems to be fine, except for my landing ability !!

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Justin,

As I stated in the PM, I also had to cut a small opening for the manifold part of the exhaust. Work slowly starting with the corner that hits first. I used blue masing tape to help...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Here's a picture of the sad event. It felt like I ran out of elevator coming in for the landing. Airspeed was too fast if anything. Both main struts were damaged. I'm getting out of the big...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Will measure it later and let you know. I lost the BBD today on its sixth flight. The wing snapped on landing. Fuse, engine, etc., OK, but the wing is a total loss. It snapped on the starboard...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Jack,

Forgot to mention that the ingition battery is mounted just behind the firewall. The ignition switch and charge port are mounted in the cowl, low on the starboard side. When running the...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Jack,

Sorry this took so long to get the pics. Been a busy week or so. But, here they are. Hope they're not too late. I just made a small shelf of aircraft ply that is wire tied to the top...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

I need to pull the cowl off anyway, so I'd be glad to get some images at the same time (over the next couple of days).

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

DA-50 @ 21 lbs. I started with a 20x12 3-blade Mejzlik. Broke it on the first flight. Now using a wood 2-blade Menz 20x12 until we get everything dialed in. Flies fine with this one. I have...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Balancing with small sheets of plywood is also how I've done it with the wimpy CG machine; very rickety and almost impossible to do alone, but seems to work. What is the Vanessa machine?

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Looks great, Ron. Love the cockpit. Let me know where you end up with the dry CG and how she flies. I think I'm still a bit tail heavy with the dry CG around 4" behind the crook in the wing.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Thanks for the info, Brian. Are you using the original 32oz tank? My dry CG was reset to about 3 7/8" from the crook for the third flight. Still had to crank in some down elevator for level...

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

Not sure if it matters, but i was running a 20x12 2 blade Menz prop this time. It seemed to pull pretty strong with the DA-50.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)

We had the second flight on my plane today and still had some flight characteristics problems. I moved the dry CG forward to about 4" behind the crook in the wing. Still using the 24 oz. tank. It...
