RE: *Aquila by Northeast Aerodynamics*

I'd guess 200+, maybe 250 flights on my Aquila. Unfortunately none in the last couple years, due to health issues. I like a forward CG, something under 30% MAC, which was do-able with battery under...

RE: *Aquila by Northeast Aerodynamics*

If you can get your bird in the air at 9.1 pounds, a piped 1.20 will be fine. The usual field results have weighed in at more like 11 pounds. The airframe should bear up to the 1.20 no problem. Mine...

RE: Looking into competing and have questions

I will back up what IMACflyer says about plane size. Yes, big planes are easier to fly, they do 'present' better to the judges, they do resist buffeting by the wind better than smaller planes. They...

RE: Looking into competing and have questions

You seem to be in the northeast corner of South Central as far as regions go, not far from the border with South East and North Central. I don't see that it matters much what region you're in, what...

New Hampshire IMAC Sept 25-26

The Granite State IMAC Contest is coming up September 25th and 26th at Elm Brook Park in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, just about one mile south from exit 6 off I-89. We'll be flying Basic, Sportsman,...

RE: Aviastar 2.00 carb headache(alternatives?)

I can report that I eventually did get through to Conley Precision, ordered one of their carbs, installed it with one of their pumps, and my problem was solved. It took a little tuning, but nothing...

RE: Plane recommendations for starting IMAC

My personal advice at this early stage (college to pay for, second season coming up, first IMAC venture, quarter scale model) would be to not torture yourself with getting the ultimate in every...

RE: Artistic Aerobatics/Hybrid Plane??

I like dbacque's suggestion of the Epsilon 90... as far as the airframe goes, at least. Powerplant, my jury is still out. I went to the Netbox site, see the Epsilon 90 ARF is reduced in price, and...

RE: What engine has rear exhaust ?

The MVVS 91 cylinder can be rotated to a rear-exhaust configuration, as long as this is done before breaking it in. Same was true of the MVVS 77, which is I think now out of production, but may still...

RE: Artistic Aerobatics/Hybrid Plane??

The G90 glow is a decent engine in its class, but a gas conversion is not going to have the same power as glow. There are planes designed around the YS110 that would fill the bill (Showtime 90,...

RE: 9.6 Volts-Fly? or No Fly?

If Futaba says 8.4 volts, I have to think they must know what they're talking about. I don't remember ever flying all the way down to the alarm, but I have on a few occasions taken off with antenna...

RE: 9.6 Volts-Fly? or No Fly?

So I ran the test on a Futaba 9.6 volt nicad, which has been in use for three years now (used only lightly this season). This battery is rated for 700 mah capacity. It actually tested under load at...

RE: 9.6 Volts-Fly? or No Fly?

Now that you've aroused my curiosity, I will take the trouble to put my TX battery on the analyzer and see what it shows. I'll post the result later today.

One test you can do without an...

RE: 9.6 Volts-Fly? or No Fly?

I used to take the view that if a receiver battery showed 4.8 volts, or TX battery showed 9.6 volts, that I had plenty of charge left for another flight. Then I got hold of a West Mountain battery...

RE: carbon fiber pushrods

Some interesting details coming out here. Ed's idea of full length steel pushrod stiffened by almost-full-length CF works well for short rods, usually aileron pushrods. I've had installations where...

RE: Help, how to remove stubborn mono/ultracoat????

With monokote there are three layers: adhesive, pigment, film. Apparently the adhesive/pigment bond is stronger than the pigment/film bond, so if you pull on a piece that's well stuck to the wood,...

RE: carbon fiber pushrods

I use both the Darroll Cady and Central Hobbies products. Both work great, but Darroll Cady is the more economical route.

2-56 is fine for .40 size models, but at .60 size the 4-40 is preferred....

RE: Plane recommendations for starting IMAC

Hey Joe, here's a suggestion: IMAC Basic says you can fly any AMA legal plane, such as a pattern plane, or a Venus, or anything that will fly straight. I've known guys who have done that, enjoyed...

RE: Plane recommendations for starting IMAC

The best part of your conclusion is, don't buy in a rush of enthusiasm, and when you're offered help from a veteran flyer, do the smart thing and listen to what he has to say, especially if he's...

RE: what plane/engine combination for small space/budget

You could use the Webra Speed 120 on a 72" wingspan aerobat and have decent power. You could go a little smaller on model size, but not much with that engine. If you have a tuned pipe, so much the...

RE: Plane recommendations for starting IMAC

I have no issue with your reasons for limiting your search to a 70" wingspan, and I have no issue with the Abell selections as far as airframes (Edge, Extra, Sukhoi, Yak). My main difficulty is with...

RE: Plane recommendations for starting IMAC

The power/weight metric for competitive aerobatic flight breaks somewhere between the 160FX or Moki 180/210 for glow planes from about 70" to 80" wingspan, and then jumps to 50 cc gas for all...

RE: Plane recommendations for starting IMAC

I will second the recommendation for the 160FX as power choice for a smaller size IMAC model; they're not too expensive, especially if you time the purchase right with the Tower Hobbies special...
