You can check out your theory by swapping your carb with another one from a 3W-100 or 106 that runs well. If you find no change after the carb swap, then I would start looking for a crankcase or...

One other thing to check. On older 3W-100 engines with the brown phenolic reed spacer block, the block can warp and give you an air leak, which can give all sorts of running problems.

When you run the engine on the ground with the cowl off, make sure you don't see any air bubbles in the fuel line that feeds the carb. Try putting in a new set of spark plugs, gap them at 0.015 inch....
