On the 48s, if it will idle forever and hold a peak rpm at full throttle then it is broken in. Sounds like you may be experiencing some of the famous MDS .48 carb problems. I do think that the MDS...

The .58 is a great engine and I currently own two of them. Only one gave me problems due to a pitts style muffler not providing sufficient backpressure to the carb. I simply restricted one outlet...
