RE: A plane for 4 geared speed 400's?

Whew - brave choice - that kit's a lot of work! I've seen quite a few threads on RCGroups on that one, and everyone seems to think it flies pretty well. Just hope you like building with sticks!

RE: A plane for 4 geared speed 400's?

I'm about to start on a Short Solent for quad 400's:

Might work for you if that's your style.

RE: Suggestions for 60-90 sized kit...any nice-flying scale subject

Great suggestions guys, thanks - keep em' coming. The reason that I can't deal with nose gear is just that the field is too rough, and has the odd gear-eating badger hole that needs to be avoided....

Suggestions for 60-90 sized kit...any nice-flying scale subject

Hi folks,

A friend and I were looking for inspiration for winter projects for next season, and wanted to try something a bit more scale-ish than normal. We both have ample flying experience, so...

RE: Help ID'ing new toy

Yep, definitely a Gerasis DG-600, I had one for a few years. Bad news...I hated it. Brutal low speed handling, and very spotty quality control.

Do NOT get it too slow or it will spin, and it...

RE: Tow Plane Suggestions

Hey guys,

The Calgary group is lining up a Brison 2.4 powered UltraStick 120 (mine) and a ZDZ80 powered Bridi Big Bee for this season, both of which are proven towplanes.

Don't bother with...

RE: Tip Plates

Winglets or tip plates would have the advantage of reducing wingtip vortex production, which is a major source of drag for inefficient planforms like we have to deal with here (constant chord is...

Tip Plates

Hi all,

Are vertical wingtip plates legal in this class?

Thanks,

RE: pre guessing a wings weight?

Not really, I'm afraid. The only guideline would be that there's a bit of an exponential relationship between required structure and size.

It's always easiest to use similar kit/design weights,...

RE: SAE Aerodesign pics & discussion

I always thought this competition would be more interesting (and probably safer) if there was some minimum controllability requirement. Something like stating that the model has to be able to perform...

RE: Retracts for rough-field operation - 16 lb model

Okay, thanks, will do. I'd really like to keep the retracts if possible...a fixed gear version of a retract-equipped warbird is just wrong.

It would be my own design, since I don't know of any...

Retracts for rough-field operation - 16 lb model

Hi folks,

Toying with the idea of building a new scale towplane for our sailplane club, and I'm going scale this time even if it kills me :)

In an attempt to find something very unusual, I...

RE: What kit is this?

My money would say that it's a Legionaire:

Local Cl for a wing during a turn...

Hi folks, need some more help. I somehow need to rationalize what
happens in a turn to a wing with variations in local Cl.

My thoughts:

For a given radius turn, it's relatively...

RE: Estimating washout from Airfoil Transitions?

Hi Tom,

Thanks a lot, that's very helpful. I've come across all these bits of info at one time or another, but filed them away under "that's interesting" and prompty forgot about them! I sure...

Estimating washout from Airfoil Transitions?

Hi all,

How would I go about estimating the effective washout that would
result from a transitional airfoil series? Programs like LiftRoll
don't account for this possibility.

I guess I...

RE: Senorita into a electric Tow plane

C40 as in Hacker C40? Not much beyond 2m. You need a B50 to start flying 0.60 size models, let alone towing anything. The big AXI would be a good choice (16-30 cell motor from Hobby Lobby), and not...

RE: Senorita into a electric Tow plane

A 0.40 would tow light 2m glider pretty well, but not much more than that. Figure something along the lines of a Zenoah G62 or Desert Aircraft DA50 for the 4m and up range (my next project, I hope).

RE: Senorita into a electric Tow plane

You can't use the high start hook to tow, because then sailplane will want to climb like it does on a high start launch. The release always goes in the nose (or the chin, worst case), and can be as...

RE: Senorita into a electric Tow plane

Not really a fair comparison, since the Actro is WAY more powerful than a .61FX.

I can do mine however (US$), about equiv to a Zenoah G38 @ 40A, or more at 50A like planned for next season:

RE: New to sailing, need advice

Proper hand launch gliders are usually 8-12 oz and reasonably fragile, is that really what you're looking for?

Technically - sink rate. Practically - nothing.

How big can you...

RE: Senorita into a electric Tow plane

Heh heh, I'm not doing very well, am I? That's what happens when you try to think at midnight :) Yes, it should be 100w/kg.

Didn't crash the tug, but I overstressed the wing doing...if memory...

RE: Senorita into a electric Tow plane

Sorry, that was wrong. It should have been 100W/lb for the combo (ie.)

13.5lb tug + 12 lb sailplane requires 1550W, give or take.

Towing it fun, but it's challenging (especially for the tug...

RE: Kadet Seniorita electric conversion

A Senorita would be too small to properly tow 4m sailplanes, but a Senior might be okay. They're both a little slow.

At any rate, check out my article on www.liftzone.com
