Take a look at the actual needle itself. I have seen and had engines that will wear the taper on the needle into a step due to a long needle extension being used. It will exhibit going from too rich...

A little resistance is normal. if you are that far into the engine that you have the bearing out change it and the ring at minimum.

What do you mean by backed out 1/2 a turn? 1/2 a turn from flush with the regulator body or 1/2 a turn from fully closed? if its 1/2 a turn from fully closed the regulator probably needs some new...
