I use a small brushed esc as a on/off switch on my planes. That way you can also adjust channel limits for brightness. Very cheap and easy to do.

I would use Plastidip over undercoating 1st, its a spray on coating for autos.

The esc temp was about 130-140F, The motor is an 11t Rush by Orion which I think is the cause of the problem.
