RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

No photos, but I did snap a quick video of the crash site. Enjoy the styro-carnage:

And for old times' sake, here's a video of a high-speed fly-by...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

I would put it back together, if it weren't so bad. There are lots of little "foam sprinkles" that I can't find a home for on the fuselage. Also, the fuselage walls that line the cock-pit are badly...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

I don't know exactly what happened. I do know these facts:

1. I could only find 3 of the 4 rubber bands at the crash site.
2. The cap popped off one of the rubber band rods.

I assume from...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

My cub finally exists only as a memory now. I strapped a helmet camera to it and went out for some aerial video. Unfortunately, one of the rubber bands broke in the air, and the rest is history. The...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

hooopes: I went flying at Grandview yesterday, accompanied a friend who built a cub-size plane entirely out of paper! Awesome stuff. Great day for flying. Ran into a Slow Stick flyer too. Great day!...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

I think you're talking about the wheel skirts, found here:

Doesn't look like HobbyZone sells...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

The difference between 7 and 8 cells is night and day. The 8-cell pack will fly just as long, but you will be able to fly much much faster. It's awesome! I highly recommend it. I got mine from...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

Yes, I had plenty of problems. The 27MHz band is shared by lots of other users, and there were lots of pockets in my field where I would lose control of the plane momentarily. Since upgrading to a...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

This is certainly possible, but you have to setup the ailerons with a single servo in the center of the wing to control both of them like lots of GWS foamies do (see the Tigermoth for example)....

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

You have two challenges to do this:

Challenge 1: The 9-cell pack will not physically fit in the Super Cub battery box. To overcome this, you could cut a hole in the top of the battery box and...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

The flaps are the ailerons, and the deflection is about 30-40 degrees. I haven't setup any mixing at all. The ailerons both go down when I flip the flaps switch on the Spektrum DX6. They still...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

I took a shoe box and compartmented it with walls of cardboard held in place by duct tape. It works well. A friend of mine uses a rolling toolbox that seems more like a stacked up tackle box with...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

Oh, I am so sorry about your experience with flaperons! I waited to test mine until I was 100 feet in the air. Flaperons do tend to induce tip stalls, where one wing tip looses lift and the other...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

Ah, the 450! That explains it. You don't have a Super Cub anymore. You've got a veritable helicopter!! :) The stock motor won't give you enough prop wash to deflect while flying inverted to keep any...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

I could agree with you if by "fly inverted very well" you mean it falls slightly more slowly than a rock when it's inverted. If you stay inverted long enough, you will hit the ground. The wing just...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

By the way, the reason the cub can't do an inverted loop is because the bottom of the wing is totally flat. This is called an asymmetrical wing. When the plane is upside down, the wing provides no...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

The magical substance is DevCon 5-minute Epoxy, available from Wal-Mart for $1.97 for a tube that will be more than ample to repair your Cub. I've broken my wing in half, busted out my whole battery...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

It doesn't matter what amperage you use to charge the pack. That just speeds up or slows down the charge time it takes. As long as you don't exceed the maximum safe amperage, it doesn't make any...

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

WiFi operates on a different set of frequencies (around 2.4GHz). CB radios will interfere with the Cub, and in fact there are two areas near me that cause lots of glitches in the air. Not sure if...

flyinmoose: can you post pictures of your brushless motor as it's attached to the cub. That's my next upgrade, and I'm curious how you did it.

RE: Official Hobby Zone "Super Cub" Thread

The cub loves the wind. I've flown in 15MPH+ wind. Give it time -- your skills will improve and you'll be able to react faster to quick changes. One time, the wind was so good that I landed the Cub...

Grandus:

With the camera sunglasses moutn, that is an awesome effect on take off. Makes it seem like a high speed fly-by.

Here's the video of the cub with ailerons. This vid shows 3 rolls:

The verdict: The cub flies beautifully with...
