RE: Super Skybolt Build

Addendum:

I was unhappy with the final weight of my Skybolt (11lbs), especially since 10oz of that was lead required for balance. Since I'm using a fairly heavy battery pack (1400mAh NiCad), I...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Yeah, I don't know what prop I'll end up with. I'm still running the 15x8 and need to start leaning it out now that I have about 12 or so flights on the engine. It's plenty fast now, so I'm not...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Well, 10 flights and no crashes, so that's my flight report ;)

I'm working on slowly increasing and fine tuning the control throws.

The 15x8 seems ideal for this engine. It turns it at...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

My incidences are exactly as specified in the plans. I have not noticed any need for excessive up-elevator to maintain level flight.

I think it only required one or two clicks of up-trim to be...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Went out to the field today and got some pics. No action shots, unfortunately, as I was the only one there. Thunderstorms moving in, so I only got one flight and barely made it out without getting...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Heh, hopefully good weather tomorrow and I'll get a few shots at the field.

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Maiden (+1 more flight) done!

Unfortunately, my wife had the digital camera, so no pics. Next trip.

It flies really nicely, even though my takeoff was messy. The large fin/rudder area is...

She's fat. 11lbs.

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Thank you!

I've pleased with the way it's turning out. I am noticing some areas where I should have been a bit more careful with prep work, but since this is my first finish of this type, I'll...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Should be done this week.

Wings are painted save for the pinstriping and numbering on the top wing. Then they'll get a coat of clear.

After that, install the ailerons, balance, and fly! ...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Getting close to the end! Since the weather is nice now, flying is interfering with building, but hopefully I'll have it set in the next couple of weeks.

1-3. Engine installed. It has been...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

OK, lots of painting going on. This is a serious pain in the ass, but it's resulting in a very nice finish. Certainly far superior to plastic covering. Just time consuming.

I decided to go...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

It's Koverall. One coat of nitrate dope as pictured. I'll be spraying two more coats of nitrate (thinned 50%) and finishing with butyrate dope (also sprayed).

I'm very pleased with how easily...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Things are moving along with the Skybolt. I'm essentially finished building and am now working on finishing. Everything is covered except the lower wing. In the attached pictures, I've fully...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Starting out with a 15x8. I've heard a 14x8 three-bladed works well, too.

Edit: Changed prop from 15x6 to 15x8, which is the prop size I'll actually be using.

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Spring is definitely here...so that's good motivation to work a bit faster on the Skybolt!

Bottom Wing

1. I ordered a couple of HS-225MG servos to control the ailerons. The leads were way...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

It's a David White laser level. Nothing special, just something I picked up at the hardware store when I was installing kitchen cabinets. I'll post a pic of it with my next update.

RE: Super Skybolt Build

I've slowed down on building a bit....cold in the garage...home improvement stuff...plus, I can't start with the dope & covering/painting until I can open the windows...hence the dearth of updates.

RE: Super Skybolt Build

The third line is for fill/drain access outside the cowl. If the carb was accessible, I just use two lines and pull the carb line off for fill/drain. Since it's not accessible when the cowl is...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Well, things are moving a bit slow. It's really damn cold in my garage/workshop, so I don't go in there for long right now ;)

Bottom Wing

1-2. LE, TE, and center sheeting has been applied....

Thanks! It's definitely a fun kit to build, although not a fast kit. If you enjoy building, you'll like this one.

RE: Super Skybolt Build

1. Essentially completed. Cap strips installed and everything nicely rounded. Some more sanding to do, but nothing else to glue on.

Yeah, I need to do that to replace the sandbags I currently use for various things...any hole in the bag and the sand gets all over the place.

I like the magazines for sheeting because I find...

RE: Super Skybolt Build

Sort of at a slow stage here, mostly sheeting the top wing. Since I'm a Titebond guy, it's glue a piece on, clamp (I use magazines to clamp with weight wherever possible), and wait.

1....
