Actually, the way a wall wart works it will still charge the 6v pack at a lower than specified rate. A wall wart is just a transformer, and if you go with a higher voltage pack you'll just get less...

As a general rule, NiCd's and Nimh's are fine with a 1C charge, but no more. So if your pack is 1000 mah, a 1 amp charge is fine as long as the charger is a peak detecting model. A bit less will...

Yes you can. It will just take longer. That said, a simple peak detecting charger is an outstanding investment in the hobby. The time saved alone is worth the purchase price, IMO. Used ones come up...
