RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Yep, happened to me a couple of times now over the course of 2 years.

I ran the engine upright in a big stick airframe first, and used to run the fuel out and put some oil down the throttle...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

There's probably lots of things that could be wrong. I know I oil fouled the spark plug once or twice and it wouldn't clear itself, it would cough splutter and carry on, then you could wind it with...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

I probably should mention that I had to turn my new pump way out from flush as well, compared to the original pump which ran close to flush.

I'm still getting smoke on 10% oil but it's a touch...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

My new "revised" pump has the two diaphrams and seems to work well.

With regard to oil content and the cdi, IMHO YS needed to go low oil for a reason and it had nothing to do with smoke trail.

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Hi Sleeping,

The discharge form the pump is/can be high pressure. The clear tube running from the just in front of the cam gear housing up the the regulator allows the diaphram to "see"...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Hi Sleeping,

the line running from the pump to the throttle body (it's not really a carburetter), is a high pressure supply to the fuel metering arrangement in the throttle body.

The line...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Thanks Alejandro,

I'll pop it back up to 20% and work out some glow driver arrangement. I can fit a normal Ni-cd through the cdi switch (cdi removed of course) and wire it down to the glow plug...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

If I wanted to run my 170cdi (low oil) on a glow plug, would the OS F plug be suitable and should I use 20% oil or would 15% oil be ok for a tank or two?

Also I should be able to get away with a...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Still no reply from YS and no word from where I bought it other than that they have notified YS and are awaiting a reply.

YS might be getting all hot and sweaty over their "new" DZ175 but I can...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Hey Topiwala, looks like they fitted a brand new pump, given the orange regulator diaphram and seat inserts.

No reply from YS to my e-mail, although they have been on holidays until 5th January...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Hi Torben, thanks for the pictures. My pump looked ok in that area but I cleaned it up anyway. I have posted pics of my "problem area", that being the pump plunger.

It can bee seen that the...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Thanks Dick, the IC vs Electric debate falls square into the same debate as LP's vs CD's. After restoring an old turnatble that belonged to my Father I was asked at a dinner which I thought sounded...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Hi Arch, I think the oil issuse was raised a while back and IIRC a lot of the UK flyers were having pump proplems even with 20% oil.

My rear bearing failure occured using a home brew of 20%...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Thanks Ed, I just poped back to update on this afternoons fun and another trip out to the field and this time I didn't even bother to take off.

It didn't prime properly by rocking it back and...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Thanks for the reply Dave, "Genuine" YS plugs but you raised an interesting point. I have noticed some wetness in the bellypan and sparkplug cap/lead and have been blaming it on the o-rings on the...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Hi Dave, When I switched to 2.4, I ran the CDI out of the RX through a filter and it worked fine, I have since switched back to a big 'ol lumpy 4 cell ni-cd to isolate power supply issues. I have...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Thanks Gary, I have an OS F glow plug sitting around that I will give a go. The engine responds well to ground adjustments of the regulator and high speed needle but after 2-3 minutes in the air it...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Just a quick question regarding the 170 pump issues, as I'm looking at buying a new pump for my 170cdi to replace the one that's on there now.

Are the pumps for the 175's available and a...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

No pattratt, this is the clear tube running up from in front of the camgear housing. It's the spring side of the diaphram that is full of oil.

I was having a bit of trouble with a misfire in...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

Just a question on the subject of regulators.

Should there be oil in the tube from the crankcase to the regulator? I noticed mine was about half full of oil and when I pulled the diaphram cover...

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

RE: YS 170 DZ CDI

I think it's quite plausable that cavitation could be induced in the very thin layer of fuel mix trapped between the teflon pump valve and aluminium seat at the instant the valve begins to open. ...
