Absolutely. That's exactly what it's there for. It keeps the clunk from getting stuck in the front of the tank.

An easy way to remove old covering is to use your heat gun. Grab the covering with a pair of pliers to pull it with (to keep from burning your hand) and heat the covering with the heat...

Definitely wait until you have the wing built and mounted. Like w8ye said, mount the wing square on the fuselage, then mount the horizontal stabilizer level with the wing, and then mount the vertical...

I took a look at the pictures in your post and you are correct, that trailing edge is pretty well warped. My first advice would be to call GP and discuss with them how badly the trailing edge is...
