RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Nemesis4u,
She's in the hanger (see pic) for the winter (other wise, known as the family room!).
The 91's work great: nice sound hearing twins fly.
I'm 'bugging' the club member who took the...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

The OS FX .91's are about the only engines with enough power to not protrude out of the cowls.
You may be able to only have a hole just for the plug but I put a large enough hole in to insure the...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

This was one of the first UAV's (top secret back then!).
ps: sometimes the way I fly, it appears so!

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

24th flight at the club's air show on Aug 13/14.

I plan on going to Muncie for the warbird flyin on Sept 3.
(probably will do more BS'ing than flying!)

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Flight update:
20 flights and she's still lookin' good.
Had her at the TORK's warbird flyin but unable to fly her due to a fuel line leak.
Fortunately I was able to fix her by just removing the...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Walt,
I'm guessing in flight since I have wing bags for the outer wings.

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Flap update.
One of the hinges broke on the flap side.

First picture:
I drilled a hole in the center of each part of the broken half of the hinge,
put a piece of steel rod in the two...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

15 flights on the P-61.
No engine adjustment but the elevator needed a few clicks.
Another pilot said with the 92 degree heat, the rods may be expanding:
I imagine it's pretty hot in those...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Bill,
Didn't see anything on their web site.

A testimonial to flying the F-82 versus the P-38.
Engine went out just past the runway on a final lap
and was able to take her all the way...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Kram,
That is good philosophy.

Nemesis4u:
The F-82 is the easiest to fly (about 60 flights on her).
I have to agree on the B-25 flying difficulties: those wings taper fast (like the P-38)....

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Flew three twins over the weekend.
Flew the easiest first ; the P-61.
One engine was not going to full throttle from idle and the low end had to be richened by a half a turn counter clock wise....

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Randy,
I've got the adjustable metal brackets that are separate from the back cover.
I assume that is the good one!

FGPierce,
I'm going to have to get some 13X8 props and try those out.

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I went out to OS's web site and for the 91 FX:

'My engine seems to be bogging, running 'heavy' or hot, and does not hold a needle setting well. What's wrong?
Assuming the engine is fully...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

After another flight today,
I put the APC 4-blade 13.8X10's on and only got 7000 RPM's
versus 8500 on the MAS 3-blade 14X7's.
Any discussion on whether this is sufficient?

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

One more flight in today.
First time off a grass runway.
Used up lots of runway to insure she had flight speed before taking off.
She was hanging by the engines again
but I put in some left...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Randy,
She's pretty light for a 90 incher so extra weight shouldn't hurt.

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Radar nose fixed.

I used a brass rod and brass tube to hold the nose on (in addition to the door latch).

First picture:
I just drilled a hole on each side with the nose on the plane.
I...

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

I find the best time for maidens are at giant scale flyin's with 28 pilots watching and camera's and video's rolling!!
Other than that, pick a calm day or with light wind going down the runway.

RE: VQ P-61 CONTRUCTION

Forgot to mention that I flew her for the first time with the cowls on as well as the retracts up.
Engines still sound fantastic.
Still using the MAS 3-bladers yet.
Will try the 4 bladers...

That was my egg timer going off in the background.

Finally got another flight in today.
She took off great and flew the usual 'on rails'.
Retracts went up OK and they appeared to be down for...

How come I can't find a P-61 heading under videos?
